“My images unfold from something that I would rather call a shadow, rather than a direct reality. This “shadow” is a fictional plant, shining grass, a fictitious animal (KEMK-KEMO / KEMONO), an old Japanese thing (item), and their multiple subspecies. This is such a thing that metaphysically is an absolute thing in itself. It is very difficult to put into words. ”
Yoji kameda
The exhibition of modern Japanese painter Yoji Kameda (b. 1963) provides a rare opportunity to see the artist-philosopher - a subtle, restrained, avoiding pop-futuristic attraction and aggressive entertainment. His art is a way of observation and reflection, his main tool is the plastic language of the picture. The Shadow and Memory exhibition - the development of ideas about transforming a visual image into a sign-symbol (started in the Bones project); and the reverse movement - from the invention of a nonexistent hieroglyph to the expressiveness of pure painting (project Alsilve).
The world of this exhibition is built on the contemplation of internal phenomena, on images that can be called the “shadow of shadows”; they balance on the verge of absolute detachment and subconscious recognition. The ghostness of the depicted objects is paradoxically balanced by the supermateriality of the canvas objects, in which Japanese attentiveness and respect for the material are clearly read.
All works are created specifically for this project and are exhibited in Moscow for the first time, during the exhibition, the audience will have the opportunity to get to know the author personally.
