Before us is a magnificent pencil drawing. It is very correct and yet extraordinary. One can feel the special brightness and incredible vividness of all the colors. All can be seen Kiprensky’s special skill, his special taste and uncommon intellect. Before us is quite an established style. The format of the creation is small, the background is densely shaded, and then imposed a slight undercolor with pastels. We sense a real painter who understands the background not as a plane of closure, but as a special space. A light figure is set against a dark background.

Before us is quite an established style. The format of the creation is small, the background is densely shaded, and then imposed a slight undercolor with pastels.
We sense a real painter who understands the background not as a plane of closure, but as a special space.
A light figure is set against a dark background. This environment around the figure is filled with a tremendous amount of sound. It resonates in a special way.
Kochubei is graceful. With this she is really able to conquer everyone. We feel that the girl’s manners are really good. She received an excellent upbringing, and her background is noble.
The picture is all filled with a special movement. The girl seems to turn around at some kind of call. Kiprensky loved such mise-en-scenes. It was this manner of depiction that became the leitmotif of all his portraits.
Kiprensky creates this magnificent portrait in 1813. At this time, the heroine was 12 years old. But you can already feel those features that would later so impress Pushkin himself. Kochubey’s young face is very beautiful. Her eyes are light and clear. Her forehead is clean and high. Her dark hair is neatly slicked back. We really have a beautiful pure creature in front of us.
Kiprensky portrays a teenage girl. But already you can feel her particular majesty and true grace. It is no coincidence that later she will become a true legislator of secular receptions.
We see Natalya Kochubey in her dress at home. The thongs of it are deliberately not tied, so the beauty of the neck is not hidden. Kiprensky paints the girl half-turned. Her face reads dissatisfaction. But this expression doesn’t spoil her at all.
Kiprensky succeeded in conveying the vivacity and mobility of the heroine. This is a true masterpiece by a true master.

The correctness and extraordinary pleasantness in his drawing, the freshness, harmony, and liveliness of the colors – all prove his talent, intelligence, and taste, gentle and educated.

The correctness and extraordinary pleasantness in his drawing, the freshness, harmony, and liveliness of the colors – all prove his talent, intelligence, and taste, gentle and educated.
This portrait is an example of a style that has already taken shape: a small format, with light pastel shading against a heavily shaded background.
In the master draftsman, one can see the painter who understands the background not as a closing plane, but as a spatial environment.
He places a light figure on a dark or a dark silhouette on a light background, representing a luminous space, and most importantly, a kind of resonating – echoing, filled with sounds from outside – environment around the human figure.
The graceful movement of Kochubei captivates – it is clear that the girl has good manners, she is well-bred, with good upbringing in her blood.
Everything is full of movement. She seems to have turned towards a certain voice, a call – this is a favorite composition, a kind of plastic leitmotif of Kiprenskys portrait art.
Kochubei was the daughter of a high-ranking official whose family spent the summer in Tsarskoye Selo.

You cannot comment Why?
The artist has rendered her features with a delicate precision; the skin tone appears pale, accentuated by the soft lighting that highlights the contours of her face. Her hair is styled in a simple manner, pulled back and arranged close to the head, suggesting a restrained elegance characteristic of early nineteenth-century fashion. A lace collar adorns her neck, adding a touch of refinement to the otherwise understated attire – a light-colored dress with draped fabric across the chest.
The background is rendered in dark, muted tones, creating a stark contrast that draws attention to the subjects luminosity and emphasizes her presence within the composition. The darkness also serves to obscure any specific location or context, contributing to an atmosphere of quiet introspection. A signature, partially visible in the upper left corner, provides evidence of authorship and date (1813).
Subtleties in expression suggest a complex inner life. Her gaze is not overtly engaging; instead, it conveys a sense of pensiveness or perhaps melancholy. The slight downturn of her lips hints at an underlying sadness or quiet contemplation. This restrained emotionality contributes to the portraits overall air of dignity and reserve.
The cropped composition and lack of environmental detail contribute to a feeling of intimacy, as if the viewer is privy to a private moment. It’s likely that the artist intended to portray not just physical likeness but also an essence of character – a sense of inner strength and quiet resilience conveyed through subtle details of expression and posture.
