In front of me is a reproduction of Mikhail Shibanovs painting Wedding Agreement Celebration. In this painting, the author depicts an ancient wedding agreement ceremony.
In the painting, we see a celebration taking place inside a house. As was customary at the time, relatives of the groom and relatives of the bride sit in different corners of the room. On the left are the matchmaker and relatives of the groom. On the right are relatives of the bride. We can see an elderly woman smiling. From her posture, we understand that she is very excited. In the center of the painting, we see the bride and the groom holding her hand gently. The bride is wearing a silver patterned sarafan (peasant blouse) and a golden vest with red flowers. She has a long veil on her head. The groom is wearing a greenish half-coat with buttons. Over it, he wears a bluish coat. The grooms matchmaker has approached him and is saying something. Behind the bride are beautiful women in kokoshniks (traditional Russian headwear). The matchmaker is wearing a red woolen zipun (long tunic). Next to him sits a tipsy peasant with a mug in his hand. On the table, between the groom and the bride, there is various food prepared for the festive dinner.
Mikhail Shibanovs attitude towards the peasants in his painting is positive. The artist knows them and treats them with respect; he likes them.
I liked Mikhail Shibanovs painting Wedding Agreement Celebration because I learned something new. I didnt even know that such an agreement existed and what it meant.

The painting by M. Shibanov, created in the 18th century, is called Celebration of a Wedding Agreement. It depicts a solemn and important event – the meeting of the groom and bride, the agreement for the wedding, the joining of two destinies into one.
The scene takes place in an ordinary peasant hut, but it is very clean and tidy. In the center of the painting are the figures of the groom and bride. The author carefully and truthfully depicts the costumes of his characters. The bride wears a traditional Russian costume: a white shirt, a long sarafan (a type of dress) made of shiny greenish fabric with beautiful embroidered flowers, and an ornate colorful vest. Her head is adorned with a wide ribbon embroidered with patterns, and on top of that is a long checkered shawl – a veil. Beads around her neck, earrings in her ears, and a handkerchief in her hand complete the majestic image of the bride.
The groom gently and tenderly holds the brides hand, looking at her with love and reverence. His costume is also festive, but more restrained: a pink shirt-kosovorotka (a type of Russian shirt), a light green полукафтан (a type of jacket), belted with a sash, and on top – a dark кафтан (another type of jacket), and boots on his feet.
The solemnity of the event is emphasized by the clothing of all the other characters. The women wear ornate headdresses – kokoshniks (traditional Russian headwear), embroidered shirts and sarafans. The men wear festive shirts and кафтаны. An elderly woman in a checkered shawl clasps her hands with admiration. Perhaps, this is the brides mother. A man with a wooden bucket and mug in his hand seems to be lost in thought, a person sitting with their back to us in a red кафтан gesticulates energetically, and someone addresses the young couple with a speech in the background...
There is nothing superfluous in the painting; everything is carefully considered and harmoniously arranged, all serving one purpose – creating an atmosphere of solemnity, festivity, and joy.
It is great! Мои друзья

You cannot comment Why?
Two young individuals stand at the table; one male, dressed in traditional garb with a green tunic and vest, and a female adorned in an elaborate embroidered dress and headwear. Their hands are clasped together, suggesting a joining or agreement. The woman’s posture is somewhat stiff, her gaze directed slightly downward, hinting perhaps at modesty or deference within the social context of the scene.
A second woman, similarly dressed but with a more assertive stance, stands beside them, seemingly overseeing the proceedings. Her hand gestures towards the couple, possibly indicating approval or guidance. A group of onlookers surrounds the table, their expressions and postures varying from attentive interest to casual observation. The range of ages present – from elderly men with weathered faces to young girls in colorful headscarves – suggests a communal event involving multiple generations.
The color palette is dominated by earthy tones – browns, greens, and reds – which contribute to the overall sense of authenticity and rural setting. Light falls unevenly across the scene, highlighting certain figures while leaving others shrouded in shadow, creating depth and visual interest. The woman in red, positioned on the right side of the composition, draws attention with her vibrant color and animated expression.
Subtleties within the painting suggest a complex interplay of social dynamics. The presence of older men, likely representing community elders or family members, implies that this agreement is not merely a private matter but one sanctioned by the collective. The varying degrees of formality in dress and demeanor among the onlookers hint at subtle hierarchies within the group. The overall impression is one of a carefully orchestrated ritual, imbued with both solemnity and a sense of shared tradition. It’s possible to interpret the scene as an exploration of social customs, familial obligations, and the significance of formal agreements within a rural community.
