To travel to St. Petersburg to enroll in the Academy of Arts, he completed two paintings: Harvester and Milkmaid, and raffled them off.
In his early works, which were exhibited at the Society for Encouragement of the Arts, traits emerged that would characterize him throughout his entire artistic career: a profound fascination with the life of the people and exceptional observational skills. Subsequent paintings solidified his position as an artist in the genre style who understood life and was able to depict it vividly and expressively.
Later, the artist traveled abroad, where he worked tirelessly from nature. He was captivated by the lives of ordinary people – peasants and workers – and constantly made sketches of them in his album.
However, his best work based on the Russian fairy tale Alenushka was created in Abramtsevo. It expresses all the tenderness and poignancy of the fairytale plot; the artist delved into the very depths of the emotional structure of the story. This work has been, and remains, the most popular and recognizable in the modern world.
