TO BE RUSSIAN
Explain to yourself what it means
To be Russian?
That sadness fills your mind -
Poisonous, impossible to escape?
That you are constantly striving for something higher:
The heavenly world seems closer than
Money, everyday life... You yearn to jump above the roof,
But why?
That in a storm or sorrow,
You gather all your strength?
Life offers many paths -
It seems that you havent discovered the most important one...
What does your soul contain
Excessively? What does it
Suffer for children, for everyone,
And is it destined to suffer?
That sometimes, at the sound of a song,
Tears well up?
Sometimes
Has there ever been anything more wonderful
Than simple silence?
That you dont want
To live without doing something significant? But how
To accomplish it? You dont strive for comfort,
But prefer to live frugally?
To be Russian means so much.
... to hear the howling of a blizzard.
And – let life define us,
The realm of spirit is our goal.
You cannot comment Why?
The water surrounding the vessel is depicted through a muted palette of grays and browns, creating an atmosphere of quietude and perhaps melancholy. Reflections on the surface suggest movement, though it’s subtle and doesnt disrupt the overall sense of stillness. The horizon line is indistinct, blending seamlessly with the sky, which contributes to a feeling of vastness and isolation.
The artist chose to depict the figure from behind, a deliberate choice that invites speculation about their thoughts or destination. This positioning removes any direct connection between the viewer and the subject, fostering a sense of detachment and prompting questions regarding the individuals journey – is it one of escape, contemplation, or simply routine? The lack of identifiable landmarks or other figures reinforces this feeling of solitude.
The subdued color scheme and loose brushwork contribute to an overall impression of introspection and quietude. There’s a suggestion of transience; the boat seems adrift, vulnerable to the elements, hinting at themes of impermanence and the human condition within a larger, indifferent natural world. The painting evokes a mood that is both peaceful and subtly unsettling, leaving room for individual interpretation regarding the narrative behind this solitary voyage.
