The hot midday sun. Summer is in full swing. In the foreground, there are dense thickets of delicate yet vibrant wildflowers: yellow-red umbrellas, and white, tender sprigs of meadowsweet. Such a lush carpet of grass and flowers that you just want to lie down and hide within it.
To the left, leaning towards the river winding like a wide ribbon, stands a graceful rowan tree, its branches laden with yellow-red clusters dipping into the water. The banks of the river are hidden by dense vegetation.
To the right, in the thick grass along the bank, slender birch trees also lean their branches toward the river.
On the opposite shore, there are dense thickets of shrubs for which the artist used almost every shade of green. Beyond them lies a vast expanse of field under which fluffy white and gray clouds drift.
The painting is rendered in bright, colorful paints, but green and yellow-red predominate, transitioning to orange.
The artist has chosen an incredibly cozy corner of Russian nature, where the atmosphere is one of celebration on a hot summer day.
I really liked this painting by Alexander Arkadyevich Rylov, a master of Russian landscape art. It evokes joy and admiration for the beauty of Russian nature.

A. Rylovs Field Chamomile
Arkady Rylovs landscape painting Field Chamomile evokes a wide range of feelings in the viewer. The first is a sense of gentle nostalgia. The painting depicts an endless, wild field with grass up to the waist, wildflowers, and trees. Birches, willows, shrubs, and, of course, the variety of flowers – you look at all this steppe splendor, and you already feel the sharp, sweet smell of summer in the countryside.
In the foreground of the painting is a familiar sight: chamomile, also known as field chamomile. These fluffy yellow inflorescences remind us of childhood, of the smell of our grandmothers house, and of dried wildflowers. The entire painting is imbued with sunlight, the humid air from nectar and pollen, and the buzzing of bees. How realistically the author has depicted the quiet, smooth surface of the river. Its mirror-like surface shows that it is a hot, windless day, which often occurs at the end of summer. On such a day, you can hear every rustle, every passing mosquito, and you want to lie for a long time on the warm, soft grass and gaze at the incredibly high sky.
The sky in Rylovs painting has simply incredible shades. Such a fairytale sky is only seen on the quietest and hottest days, when the air is so transparent and clean that everything around takes on new, unbelievable colors. On its piercing blue, motionless, heavy clouds swirl, illuminated by an otherworldly lilac color.
Arkady Rylovs painting Field Chamomile is a work that awakens in everyone a tender love and attachment to their homeland, and pride in its unique, amazing beauty, which you will not find anywhere else in the whole world.
Arkady Rylovs Field Rowan
Arkady Rylov called his painting Field Rowan. It was painted quite some time ago – in 1922. In the foreground of the painting, we see those very buttercups with their beautiful yellow flowers. They are called field rowan because their leaves resemble those of a rowan tree. In the background, we see various trees, but what immediately catches my eye is the birch tree, as it is drawn so distinctly. I would also like to highlight the clouds. They greatly enhance and complement this landscape; they seem to be floating in reality and about to drift away into the distant blue sky. The artist chose a rather steep bank as the subject of his painting. In the middle ground of the painting, we see a continuous, clean river. I believe that a landscape like this perfectly describes the beauty of the Russian countryside. This is what the Russian nature looks like in summer, and the painting depicts the height of summer. Why do I say this? Because we can only observe such vibrant colors during this time of year. A clear sky with fluffy clouds, a calm river, a green horizon – all of this reminds me only of summer. This landscape evokes only the kindest and warmest feelings in me; its immediately apparent that Arkady Rylov painted this picture with love for nature, for every blade of grass. What eye would not be delighted by such a combination of green, blue, and yellow colors?
I believe that no matter how long ago this painting was created, it will always remain relevant. After all, people are drawn to paintings that are painted with soul, like Arkady Rylovs Field Rowan landscape.
Arkady Rylov: Field Rowan. Composition.
The painting by the artist Arkady Rylov depicts a summer landscape. Its likely August, and you can feel the approach of autumn. Before us is living nature in its pristine form. A river flows, and along its banks grow shrubs, white-trunked birches, and green grass. The water in the river is a deep blue color, and it reflects the cloudy sky and vegetation around it. In the background are the vast expanses of the Russian plain. Meadows are covered with a green carpet of grasses. Occasionally, tall trees and shrubs can be seen.
The day is overcast, but patches of sunlight peek through the heavy clouds. It seems that purple clouds will soon gather together, and rain will begin to fall.
In the foreground, there is a variety of meadow plants and delicate wildflowers. Among them grows a field rowan. A wonderful shrub with carved leaves and orange berries adorns the landscape. The berries are not just orange; they have an amazing reddish hue. Mixed with the rowan, white field chamomile blooms. How well these two colors complement each other! As the cold weather approaches, the rowan will gain color, and its berries will become a bright crimson.
The painting evokes a sense of tranquility. It is not abundant in bright colors. Only clusters of rowan fill the landscape with warmth and sunlight.
Essay about the painting Field Fireweed by A. Rylov
Arkady Alexandrovich Rylov, a remarkable artist, whose works make people feel how deeply one can express their feelings through paintings. Little Arkasha spent his entire childhood and youth in Vyatka, and from there, from his childhood, he retained an enduring love for Russian nature and its beautiful, unique landscapes.
In 1922, he created one of his most wonderful works, the painting Field Fireweed. This landscape, seemingly very simple, is so familiar to everyone that it involuntarily catches the eye and makes you want to look and examine everything depicted in this painting.
In the foreground, bright yellow fireweed flowers (also known as chamomile) are presented to the viewers gaze. There is thick, lush grass, which invites you to run down towards the river. And the river itself is so calm, majestic, that it beckons and calls you to swim in it, especially on such a hot day. The blue sky with fluffy white clouds, willows on the other side of the river, and a stack of hay in the distance – this is familiar to most Russians. Perhaps it is because we all miss places like these so much, which exist in the life of almost everyone, or perhaps it is because the artist so subtly captured that there is beauty in simplicity. I dont know. But I always want to look at this painting; it is like carefree childhood, like the Motherland that we love. It is wonderful that artists like Arkady Rylov have left such a legacy for their descendants – their magnificent works that remain with everyone in their hearts for a long time.

Beyond this floral display, a river or stream snakes its way into the distance, reflecting the sky above. Its surface appears dark blue, creating a contrast with the lighter hues of the surrounding foliage. Along the banks, dense thickets of trees are visible, their leaves painted in varying shades of green, contributing to the overall sense of depth and enclosure.
The sky is partially obscured by these trees but reveals patches of pale blue interspersed with billowing white clouds. The artist’s treatment of the clouds – with their soft edges and diffused light – suggests a fleeting moment in time, capturing the dynamism of atmospheric conditions.
A notable element is the use of light; it seems to emanate from an unseen source, illuminating the foreground flowers and casting shadows across the landscape. This creates a sense of spatial recession and draws the viewer’s eye towards the distant horizon. The composition feels deliberately informal, eschewing strict symmetry in favor of a more naturalistic arrangement.
Subtly, theres a feeling of tranquility conveyed through the scene. It evokes a sense of pastoral serenity – a quiet moment observed within nature’s embrace. The abundance of life and color hints at themes of renewal and growth, while the receding perspective suggests an invitation to explore beyond what is immediately visible. The painting seems less concerned with precise representation than with capturing the essence of a summer day in a rural setting, prioritizing feeling over detail.
