Description of Gustave Courbet’s painting The Man with the Pipe
The painting was painted between 1846 and 1849.
Courbet was a true master of portraits. What is interesting, he himself was the model for the canvases. The artist managed to write many self-portraits, in which one can feel how his skill is gradually growing.
We see a fairly young man with half-closed eyes . The pallor of his face is effectively shaded by a mop of hair of a pleasant chestnut color. Protruding cheekbones and the wings of his rather thin nose are drawn with the help of light shadows. The line of his mouth is deliberately marked in crimson. There is a sense of maximum sensuality of this man.
The artist obviously with genuine pleasure conveyed his features, slightly romanticizing the image. Courbet looks like himself. The collar of his shirt is slightly open, the green blouse is very realistic, and on the face you can read a certain cynicism. It is the nobility and the special tact of the image created by the painter that bribes us.
The painter uses rather gloomy colors, but the viewer doesn’t get an oppressive impression. All the features of the hero are painted with extraordinary skill. The lines are so soft that it’s amazing. The face as if glowing from within. It radiates incredible nobility and aristocratism. The hair blends in with the main background. The artist purposely does not focus on this detail, as it is not the main one.
It is important to represent the hero’s face and his expression as clearly as possible. It is said that it is a mirror of our soul. Courbet was able to convey the character of the character simply by prescribing a certain way of his facial features.
Courbet was a true master, able to express in his self-portraits the spirit of his time, as well as to emphasize the main features of the man of the time. A somewhat romantic reading in no way prevents the creation of the clearest possible picture of the era in which Courbet lived and worked.

The picture has something of this: people, portrait, man, facial hair, mustache, beard, music, smoke, face, wear, musician, leader, blood, scientist, god.
Perhaps it’s a close up of a painting of a man with his eyes closed and his head turned to the side.
