How many painters have painted on this theme! How many canvases are on display in various museums around the world under this title. But this canvas by Velazquez is simply amazing with its tranquility and chastity. The most interesting thing yet to realize that depicted this theme, completely unaware of the true events, the details. Leading up to the fact that the reading of an important biblical episode is interesting, but flawed through and through.
Description of the painting The Adoration of the Magi by Diego Velázquez
How many painters have painted on this theme! How many canvases are on display in various museums around the world under this title. But this canvas by Velazquez is simply amazing with its tranquility and chastity. The most interesting thing yet to realize that depicted this theme, completely unaware of the true events, the details. Leading up to the fact that the reading of an important biblical episode is interesting, but flawed through and through. Take for example their clothing.
Velázquez, not knowing how the Palestinians or Jews were dressed, dressed all the characters in his contemporary clothes. And the Child is not in a manger, but on his mother’s lap. And the three wise men look like three honorable city lords, and the only thing that gives away their mission are the three covered bowls of gifts. Otherwise, without these items, you might have thought that this was a secular visit to the name day.
What the painter remained faithful to was the appearance of the Virgin and Child. Submissiveness, sweetness, a certain destiny... And the background of the painting? Velázquez did not paint the background, but on the left-hand corner of the painting we see a landscape and it is depicted at sunset. Isn’t that Golgotha? The place where Christ was executed. And here it’s amazing how clearly and concisely the painter portrayed the whole path of Christ - from Christmas to the Resurrection. In this case, the latter is indicated only by a clear mountain landscape illuminated by the receding sun. True, the landscape turned out very European, because the author had never seen the land where Christ was born. And all medieval painters suffered from this, not just Velazquez.
Still, the painting is beautiful, even if it seems dark. But as a bright spot of light attracts the face of the Child. His childish eyes are already pensive. The amazing thing is that Velazquez swaddled the Child, did not give him space. Whereas other authors have tried not to swaddle him, to portray him as stretched out to the world.
