Description of Thomas Gainsborough’s Lady in Blue
Thomas Gainsborough is one of the most famous portrait painters of the late IIIVX century. The painting was completed by the artist in 1780, painted in oil. The original painting is currently kept in the Hermitage. The artist was notable for his special ability to harmoniously select the colors to depict secular personages in his paintings. The artist was especially popular with the English nobility of the time.
The name of the lady posing for the artist is still a mystery to researchers of the artist’s work. There is an assumption that this mysterious aristocrat was the Duchess de Beaufort, but the true confirmation of these facts has not been found.
Note that the painting is done with the use of cold shades. Blue in abundance is used to depict the long shawl with which the lady covers parts of her light dress, the duchess’s hat is also in blue. It appears as if the young lady’s thick, heavily powdered hair also has a bluish hue.
The snow-white color of the young girl’s skin would make anyone admire it. The artist has displayed the external features of the young person as much as possible and as if he had managed to convey through the fine details of the image her inner state. Outwardly unperturbed, with a mysterious, penetrating look of dark brown eyes. Dark, thin eyebrows and a slight healthy rudeness to her young cheeks. The lady’s curls are styled in such a way that the watcher can see them touching her delicate shoulders from behind. And a golden crucifix is visible at the end of a dark silk ribbon tied under her chin.
The girl’s scarlet lips are slightly ajar, exposing her pearly white teeth. Slender fingers lightly hold a shawl that slips down from the girl’s delicate shoulders. The aristocrat gently holds it up, looking somewhere in the distance.

Here we see an individual characterized by delicate features: a slightly upturned nose, full lips subtly parted, and large eyes with a direct gaze. Her complexion appears pale, accentuated by the soft lighting that illuminates her face. A faint blush graces her cheeks, contributing to an impression of health and vitality. The artist has rendered her expression as one of quiet composure, bordering on melancholy; it is not overtly joyful but rather suggests a thoughtful introspection.
The woman’s hair is styled in the elaborate fashion characteristic of the period – a towering edifice constructed with curls, feathers, and what appears to be fabric trim. This hairstyle, while visually striking, also serves as a marker of status and wealth, signifying access to skilled hairdressers and expensive materials. The blue garment she wears is draped loosely around her shoulders, revealing glimpses of a white chemise beneath. A black ribbon tied at the throat adds a touch of formality and draws attention to the delicate curve of her neck. On one hand, she holds a portion of the fabric, exposing a ring on her finger – another indicator of affluence.
The color palette is dominated by cool tones: blues, whites, and subtle pinks. The dark background serves to heighten the luminosity of the woman’s skin and clothing, creating a sense of depth and emphasizing her presence within the composition. The brushwork appears relatively smooth, indicative of a desire for realism while maintaining an idealized representation of beauty.
Subtly, the painting conveys notions of wealth, status, and perhaps even a degree of restraint or melancholy. The elaborate costume and hairstyle speak to a privileged position in society, while the woman’s expression hints at complexities beyond mere outward display. There is a sense of studied grace, suggesting an awareness of being observed and portrayed.
