In this Caravaggio nocturne, Saint Sebastian lies partially clothed, his body marred by arrows, his arm being tended to by Saint Irene. The scene is dramatically lit by a lantern held by a third figure, casting a stark, theatrical glow on the figures and plunging the background into deep shadow. Irene, with a look of compassionate concentration, uses a needle to extract an arrow from Sebastians arm, aided by the lamplight and another woman.
The subtexts of the painting are multifaceted:
