Here we see a series of geometric forms – triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids – layered upon one another. They suggest recognizable objects: a bowl containing fruit, a bottle, what appears to be a table or ledge. However, these elements are not rendered realistically; their shapes are distorted, their spatial relationships ambiguous. The artist seems less interested in depicting the objects themselves than in exploring the interplay of form and color.
A significant portion of the left side is occupied by a large, vertical purple plane, bisected by a thin white line that introduces a sense of division or separation. This element contributes to the overall feeling of instability and fragmentation. A smaller orange-brown triangle sits adjacent to it, creating a visual counterpoint. The upper section features a circular form with a red interior, positioned against a backdrop of grey and blue planes.
The artist’s signature, “Gimbutini,” along with the date 1959, is inscribed in cursive script at the lower right corner, providing a temporal anchor for the work. The inscription appears somewhat detached from the composition, as if added after the main elements were established.
Subtly, theres an impression of interiority or enclosure. The compressed space and flattened perspective suggest a world viewed through a filter, perhaps representing memory, dream, or abstraction of reality. The deliberate lack of depth and the fractured nature of the forms might be interpreted as a commentary on the instability of perception or the elusiveness of meaning. The work doesn’t offer easy answers; instead, it invites contemplation about the process of seeing and understanding.
