Carracci depicts the triumphal wedding of Bacchus and Ariadne. We see an unusual procession. The artist dedicated his canvas to the theme of love as an all-consuming feeling. This canvas is based on a myth from antiquity. Theseus is known to many people. It was him and loved Ariadne. She helps him out of the magical labyrinth of the formidable Minotaur. The whole point is that for this, Theseus made a promise to marry Ariadne.
Description of the painting "Triumph of Bacchus and Ariadne" by Annibale Carracci
But as a result he leaves her for Naxos. Here she is found by the young Bacchus and immediately falls in love with the beauty.
It was decided to celebrate Lemnos. It was she who was so expressively portrayed by Carracci. This grand procession stretches across the entire vault of the gallery, of which this canvas is a part. The result creates a particular pattern that is striking in its rhythm. At the head of the procession is Selene, who is completely drunk. Bacchus himself is seated on a chariot pulled by graceful leopards. He is young and beautiful. The satyrs and maenads run ahead. Their mesmerizing dance really cannot fail to impress.
Carracci portrays the bodies masterfully. He pays attention to every curve of the body. The natural tones in the rendering of skin color are amazing. The characters on his canvas are all alive. He gives the impression that the characters, though fairy-tale-like, are as real as possible.
The entire canvas is flooded with light. Predominate blue, gold and pastel shades. Everything exults and merges in a single burst of joy. The artist fills his canvas with a huge number of characters, each of which is individual. One can view his creation to infinity. The beauty of nature and the harmony of man with nature sounds incredibly powerful in his masterpiece.
The painter has taken a mythological subject, but he interprets it differently. He does not just depict the wedding procession, but puts his thoughts about the beauty of man and nature into the canvas.
