Flanking this central event are four figures, each enveloped in halos indicating their sanctity. To the left stands a woman adorned in vibrant red robes, her expression somber, with what appears to be a wheel nearby – potentially referencing Saint Catherine. Adjacent to her is a figure draped in dark garments, head bowed in apparent grief or contemplation; this could represent Mary Magdalene. On the right side of Christ, another female figure, clad in orange-red drapery, gazes towards him with an expression of reverence and sorrow. Finally, a male figure wearing ecclesiastical vestments holds aloft a staff, likely symbolizing his authority as a religious leader – possibly Saint John the Baptist or Saint Peter.
The background is rendered in a muted beige tone, providing contrast to the brightly colored garments of the figures. The ground beneath Christ’s feet is sparsely covered with grass and vegetation, adding a touch of naturalism to the otherwise stylized setting.
Several subtexts emerge from this arrangement. The symmetry suggests a deliberate attempt at balance and order within the narrative of suffering and redemption. The inclusion of female saints alongside Christ highlights themes of compassion, mourning, and faith. The wheel near Saint Catherine introduces an element of martyrdom and endurance. The figure with the staff signifies divine authority and guidance in times of adversity.
The overall effect is one of solemnity and piety, intended to evoke a sense of reverence and contemplation in the viewer. The artist’s choice of depicting Christs body with some degree of anatomical detail, while maintaining stylistic conventions, suggests an attempt to connect the sacred narrative with human experience.
