Two skeletal trees rise from the ground near the wall; their branches are bare and reach upwards in a gesture that seems to express yearning or despair. Floating above them, and also positioned near a towering, dark structure in the background, are several spherical forms – they appear as if detached from gravity, adding to the sense of unreality.
The most striking element is the large, vertical form dominating the central portion of the painting. This structure appears as a monolithic wall or edifice, from which two streams of liquid cascade downwards. At the top of each stream, what seems to be a human profile emerges – their faces are rendered in a simplified, almost mask-like fashion, and they appear to be weeping. The water flows down onto the ground below, pooling slightly before disappearing into the landscape.
The color palette is restrained; predominantly cool tones of blue, grey, and brown create an atmosphere of melancholy and isolation. The limited use of warmer hues in the foreground’s vegetation provides a subtle contrast that draws attention to its organic nature against the starkness of the background.
Subtextually, the painting seems to explore themes of loss, grief, and the burden of memory. The weeping figures atop the structure suggest an outpouring of sorrow or regret, while the barren trees symbolize decay and absence. The stone wall could represent a barrier – either physical or psychological – separating the viewer from something desired or unattainable. The floating spheres introduce a sense of detachment and surrealism, hinting at the instability of perception and the fluidity of time. Overall, the work evokes a profound feeling of loneliness and existential questioning.
