APOSTLE JOHN
Close to Jesus, enlightened,
John perceives the Word,
Like a luminous idea for the world.
Only what Jesus said
Eases the burden of mundane days,
Promising a different life in the future.
I can only dimly imagine
The forms of afterlife,
So I turn back to the Gospels again.
There is an idea of the world. And words.
There is dead grass of oblivion –
I cut it down, I free myself from it...
John was freed – or did he not have -
Anger, envy and other arrows,
That pierce the soul like a bodys pain.
Jerusalem is very grand.
Who in it yearns for wise books?
The poor quarters are tightly packed.
A city surrounded by hills, hills.
Herods palace is luxurious – we
Should not be seduced by luxury.
Streets. Alleys. Dead ends.
Steps lead to the city ponds.
A massive block of the Temple looms overhead.
John understood the meaning of the Last Supper
Better – because he was enlightened -
Than others. The future is frightening.
And on Patmos, he was in spirit,
He foresaw the future, captivated
By images – their layering is strange.
Revelation – a review of all
Significant events up to the 1950s,
Up to the twentieth century.
Beyond that lies an entrance into a coded space.
Through the air-sun canopy,
The third millennium has been brought down.
Close to Jesus, enlightened,
John knew what would happen next...

The figures attire consists of layered garments – a green tunic beneath a deep red cloak draped over the shoulders. The folds of the fabric are rendered with considerable attention to detail, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that contributes to the overall sense of movement within the scene. A small object, possibly a chalice or vessel, is held in the figure’s left hand, partially obscured by the drapery.
The background is characterized by swirling dark tones punctuated by hints of lighter hues, suggesting an atmospheric perspective rather than a clearly defined space. This treatment obscures any sense of location and directs focus entirely on the central figure. The lighting appears to originate from an unseen source above and slightly to the left, illuminating the face and upper torso while leaving portions of the lower body in shadow.
Subtleties within the work suggest a narrative beyond mere portraiture. The direct gaze implies a connection with the viewer, potentially inviting them into the figure’s internal world. The held object could symbolize spiritual sustenance or a pivotal moment in a larger story. The turbulent background might represent inner turmoil or external challenges faced by the individual. Overall, the painting conveys a mood of solemnity and profound reflection, hinting at themes of faith, revelation, and personal struggle.
