Agni Yoga is a doctrine that combines features of Eastern teachings with some features of purely Western teachings, it is also called "Living Ethics." This teaching was created by Roerich’s wife, he himself took part in its creation, helped to write the book, and the painting "Agni Yoga" expresses what this teaching was for the artist. And it was a light in the darkness, a beacon of light in a raging, threatening world. The painting depicts mountains, a favorite motif of Roerich, who all his life praised them, the search for Shambhala and its eternal, enduring beauty.
Description of the painting "Agni Yoga" by Nikolai Roerich
Agni Yoga is a doctrine that combines features of Eastern teachings with some features of purely Western teachings, it is also called "Living Ethics." This teaching was created by Roerich’s wife, he himself took part in its creation, helped to write the book, and the painting "Agni Yoga" expresses what this teaching was for the artist. And it was a light in the darkness, a beacon of light in a raging, threatening world.
The painting depicts mountains, a favorite motif of Roerich, who all his life praised them, the search for Shambhala and its eternal, enduring beauty. The sky above them is iridescent, from yellow to dark blue, a sharp peak scratches it with its peak, but it cannot tear. On a lonely rock, elevated above the world, stands a woman (the model for her was Roerich’s wife, Elena, which is quite symbolic).
She is wearing oriental clothes stretching to her heels, her hair is set in a high hairdo, evoking memories of Japan or China. She holds one hand, her right hand, which means truth is in it, outstretched in front of her, and above the open palm burns white fire, the flame of Knowledge and Higher Meaning.
The picture is painted in such a way that the woman is akin to a guiding star or a lighthouse, frozen lonely on a rock. Everything around her is done in cold colors, blue, gray, purple, and she herself is the same - cold, detached, and even the flame in her hand is not scarlet or yellow, but white. It can illuminate, but it cannot warm, and that is not really the truth - it will not give warmth to life, it will only illuminate it and show it where to go next. Only the thin streak of yellow on the horizon, rapidly darkening in the height, appears to be hope for a dawn that will come sooner or later.
The woman stands in a cold, murky, dreary world, and along with the white flame above her palm, the shining sun is preparing to rise over the world, which will illuminate and warm it with the light of Higher Truth.

The central figure stands atop a rocky outcrop that juts out into the expanse below. The individual is draped in flowing robes, their posture conveying both dignity and a quiet strength. Their head is adorned with what appears to be elaborate headdress or hair arrangement. Most notably, they hold aloft a luminous orb of light, which serves as a focal point for the entire scene. This sphere emits a gentle glow that contrasts with the surrounding darkness, symbolizing perhaps enlightenment, knowledge, or spiritual guidance.
The landscape itself consists of stylized mountain peaks silhouetted against the sky. These are not rendered with realistic detail but rather possess an almost symbolic quality, suggesting permanence and stability. The lower portion of the scene depicts a body of water – a lake or sea – that mirrors the colors of the sky above, further emphasizing the sense of vastness and tranquility.
The painting’s subtexts appear to revolve around themes of spiritual illumination and connection with something beyond the material world. The solitary figure embodies a role of mediator or guide, offering light and knowledge to those who might seek it. The landscape functions as a symbolic representation of an inner realm – a space for contemplation and transcendence. The deliberate simplification of forms and the use of cool colors contribute to a feeling of otherworldly calm and invite introspection on the part of the viewer. There is a sense of quiet power emanating from the central figure, suggesting a profound understanding or access to hidden truths.
