Painter: Konstantin Alekseevich Korovin
Konstantin Korovin, the brightest Russian impressionist, passionately painted portraits and still lifes, and especially landscapes. Nature in all seasons, in clear daylight and in mysterious gloomy night, alone in its beauty or serving as a living background for human figures, blooming or temporarily dying out - Korovin’s landscape painting is rich, varied and, without a doubt, extremely talented. The Russian artist often contemplated hidden corners of Russia, went to Paris every year, rested and worked in the Crimea.
Description of the painting "Summer" by Konstantin Korovin
Konstantin Korovin, the brightest Russian impressionist, passionately painted portraits and still lifes, and especially landscapes. Nature in all seasons, in clear daylight and in mysterious gloomy night, alone in its beauty or serving as a living background for human figures, blooming or temporarily dying out - Korovin’s landscape painting is rich, varied and, without a doubt, extremely talented.
The Russian artist often contemplated hidden corners of Russia, went to Paris every year, rested and worked in the Crimea. "Summer" 1900 he displayed with photographic precision, but through the prism of an Impressionist view of the world.
The viewer’s attention is presented by a surprisingly lively composition. The technique of applying oil paints as if borrowed from nature itself - so natural and realistic look grass, leaves, earth and all the contents of the canvas.
The swamp-colored river reflects the colors of the clouds in the sky, and the eye follows its swift current. Paying attention to the distant horizon, it’s easy to notice a patch of white and red color combination: this is how the painter often dressed the characters of his creations. The lone figure lost in the fields merges with the natural expanse in harmony and serenity.
The brownish buildings of small houses hint at the constant human presence.
The "Summer" painting seems to be illuminated with yellowish light, which is how the author conveys the heat of the scorching midday sun to his spectators.
The thoroughness of the landscape is amazing in Korovin’s work. He used so many different shades of green, and so many times the brush touched this canvas!
For his diligent work on it the picture "Summer" received due attention and is now in the motherland of Impressionism - in the city of inexhaustible romance - Paris.

The middle ground reveals a gentle, sun-drenched slope of yellowish-green grass, dotted with a few scattered trees or bushes. A hint of human presence is visible on this slope, with small, silhouetted figures suggesting people engaged in light activity, perhaps a picnic or a leisurely stroll. In the distance, a cluster of buildings, likely farmhouses or cottages, nestle amongst the trees on the crest of the hill.
The sky above is a soft blue, with streaks of white and pale yellow clouds, indicative of clear summer weather. The overall impression is one of tranquility and the simple beauty of the natural world during the height of summer. The paintings impressionistic style, characterized by visible brushstrokes and a focus on light and color, evokes a feeling of warmth and a fleeting moment captured in time. There are no overt political or social subtexts; the painting is a celebration of rural summer life and the restorative power of nature.
