Painter: Isaac Ilyich Levitan
The painting depicts the Volga shore, overgrown with grass near the water, and at an elevation covered with dense shrubs and trees, displayed in the water, which shimmers in the advancing twilight. The water recreates the rays of the setting sun gliding over it, giving it a kind of mystery and inscrutability. The reflections seem to echo the dark green reflections of the tree crowns, making them lighter, giving them blue and bluish hues, painting the water with a bright coloring. The treetops on the high bank are also illuminated by the setting sun and depicted in contrasting light colors.
Description of Isaac Levitan’s painting "On the Volga" (1888)
The painting depicts the Volga shore, overgrown with grass near the water, and at an elevation covered with dense shrubs and trees, displayed in the water, which shimmers in the advancing twilight. The water recreates the rays of the setting sun gliding over it, giving it a kind of mystery and inscrutability. The reflections seem to echo the dark green reflections of the tree crowns, making them lighter, giving them blue and bluish hues, painting the water with a bright coloring.
The treetops on the high bank are also illuminated by the setting sun and depicted in contrasting light colors. In the foreground, thanks to the play of light, the river water is shown completely white. The opposite bank of the river is not visible and the artist views the landscape from it which helps to strengthen the sense of vastness of the great river.
In the middle of the green and blue coloring there are some warm ochre colors on the precipitous clay bank, free of grass cover. This brownish reddish spot shines in the mirror of the water, doubling the impression of warmth. And the protruding bridges and the abandoned boat in the absence of people add to the sense of desolation and lostness, though the viewers are not disturbed or tense. The lack of plot and dynamics convey the sad and touching experiences of the author. The portrayal of the Volga, calmly spread out before nightfall, conveys a picture of everyday life of the great Russian river.
The sky on the canvas is even grayish color, almost without shades and nuances, and only in the corners of the canvas light clouds are slightly distinguished. The painting "On the Volga" amazes with its touching soul penetration, it conveys anxious and worried state of the author who filled it with special philosophical sense. The majestic openness of the Russian river and austere lyricism of the Volga landscape opened before the author an unfamiliar face of the native nature, interested him by its powerful epic splendor.

Along the horizon line, a thick band of trees rises, their forms rendered with vigorous brushstrokes that convey texture and depth. The color palette is predominantly green, ranging from deep emerald to lighter shades, creating a sense of abundance and vitality. Hints of brown and ochre are interspersed within the foliage, adding visual complexity and preventing monotony.
A small boat appears in the middle ground, its presence subtly integrated into the scene. It’s not the focal point but rather an element that contributes to the overall feeling of quietude and rural life. The sky is a pale, muted tone, almost blending with the waters surface, which further emphasizes the horizontal expanse of the landscape.
The artist employed a technique characterized by loose brushwork and a focus on capturing fleeting impressions of light and color. There’s an intentional lack of sharp detail; instead, forms are suggested rather than precisely defined. This approach lends the scene a sense of immediacy and authenticity, as if it were observed directly from nature.
Subtly, the painting evokes themes of harmony between humanity and the natural world. The boat suggests human presence but does not disrupt the tranquility of the environment. It speaks to a connection with the land and a reverence for its beauty. The overall effect is one of peaceful contemplation, inviting the viewer to share in the stillness of this riverside moment.
