The artist employed a limited palette – primarily black, yellow, red, and blue – to define the form and create visual contrast. Black outlines delineate the major features, while areas of color are used sparingly to add depth and emphasis. A distinct lack of shading contributes to the flatness of the image, reinforcing its graphic quality.
The surrounding border is noteworthy. It consists of a wavy line in blue, punctuated by alternating red and yellow dots, creating a decorative frame that both contains and isolates the central figure. This framing device could be interpreted as symbolic – perhaps representing the constraints or boundaries imposed upon royalty, or conversely, highlighting the figure’s elevated status above the mundane world.
The overall effect is one of deliberate distortion and reduction. The artist seems less interested in creating a realistic portrait than in exploring the essential characteristics associated with kingship – power, authority, perhaps even a degree of inscrutability – through an abstracted visual language. Theres a sense of playful irony at work; the regal subject matter is treated with a lightness that undermines any potential for solemnity or reverence. The simplified forms and bold colors suggest a deliberate rejection of traditional artistic conventions in favor of a more immediate, expressive mode of representation.
