THE COLOSSEUM
1.
The world beneath the Colosseum lies hidden,
A secret known only to those who seek it.
It was built for the pleasure of the people,
But now it is a place of darkness and despair.
The corridors are filled with shadows,
And the wheels of fate turn relentlessly.
Slaves toil in the depths, their lives as fleeting as a dream.
The tiers rise above them, reaching towards the sky,
Adorned with arches that soar like wings.
But the spectacle is always the same:
Someone will die today, or perhaps tomorrow.
Symbols adorn the columns,
And the emperors box is lavishly decorated.
Here, everyone follows their own rules.
The centuries roll by, round and round.
Stairs, columns, passages...
Whispers about money, about business.
Gates, vaults hanging overhead...
Crimson thoughts of sin.
2.
- The thrushes were delicious at lunch,
And I enjoyed the boiled octopus.
- Tiburius, today they will give us a real show:
Fighters, death, and glory!
- My debt... – Oh, no talk of debts here.
Fragments of conversations, a light breeze.
If the thirst for blood is strong in their hearts,
Who can bear witness to the aggression of the spectators?
The net rises, and a Nubian is caught.
A trident flashes by. Blood flows into the sand.
Rome groans – a wild cry echoes through the air.
And this world seems hardly pleasing to the sky.
3.
Crimson excitement turning to rage -
Kill!
Bloody seeds are sown,
Planted in hearts...
There is no end to these spectacles.
4.
They built models of ships,
Engineered mechanisms that brought water.
A naval battle, more exciting than any other,
Will surely please the people.
The organizers of this celebration know what theyre doing.
And the blue surface of the water shimmers brightly.
A gladiator will not miss a chance
To survive, if such a thing is possible.
5.
A bowl of boiled meat weighs heavy in his stomach,
He would rather have asparagus and wine.
The athlete is angry as he prepares to enter the arena.
Roman spring is clearly not bringing joy.
No, its not bringing joy; sweat beads on his palms.
Is he afraid of death? The aftertaste is bitter.
The sand blinds him – like fire.
And his hand trembles weakly, covered in sweat.

The artist employed a muted palette, primarily consisting of ochre, brown, and grey tones, which reinforces the impression of antiquity and weathering. Washes of color are applied loosely, creating a textured surface that mimics the rough materiality of stone and brick. The sky is rendered in soft greys and whites, suggesting an overcast day or perhaps diffused light.
Foreground elements consist of scattered rubble and sparse vegetation – a few clumps of dry grass and low-lying shrubs – which further emphasize the ruinous state of the structure. These details ground the composition and provide a sense of depth. The artist’s brushstrokes are visible throughout, contributing to an immediacy and spontaneity in the rendering.
Beyond a straightforward depiction of a building, the drawing evokes themes of times passage and the impermanence of human endeavors. The grandeur of the structure is tempered by its evident decline, prompting reflection on cycles of creation and destruction. There’s a quiet melancholy present; it isnt celebratory but rather contemplative, suggesting an awareness of history’s capacity to both elevate and erode. The absence of figures or activity within the scene amplifies this sense of solitude and abandonment, inviting viewers to consider the stories embedded within these weathered stones.
