BIBLICAL POEM
Did Daniil Andreev know what
Would happen to our world half a century later!
There was no global war, which he worried about, but
People are changed – who, why, and how –
Its hard to even imagine the Rose of the World.
The darkness of pop stars, and the sticky darkness of money.
Should we praise the formalism of churches?
Oh, the depths of biblical times!
Patriarchs whose flocks are immense.
The givenness – that into which is placed
Everyone now: values are conditional,
Everything has already become so. I see biblical flocks
In the heavens: they shimmer:
Clouds today and always
Deceive with the silence of peace.
The Bible of plains, roads, and mountains,
The Bible of kings, ideas, prophets.
What the inner eye perceives
Has no mortality or limits.
Old religions are strong
On the external, formal side.
There is no one without guilt,
What shall we do with such a truth?
Everything is inflamed by vanity today,
And – take everything from life – thats the motto.
We challenge the heavens again.
We watch aggressive movies.
The whole world is permeated with aggression.
I remember the dust of biblical roads,
As if I had walked on them – here,
Although I dont meet them in the present.
How can we imagine the advice of the wisest?
Everyone has quarreled with each other.
The height is eternally unresponsive.
Once a person went behind a plow.
Oh, the branching secrets of the Bible! The essence
Of meaningful grains – we dont see the grains.
The external text, where there is bitterness, anger, and judgment,
Is multilayered in inner meaning.
Symbols – how much power do they hold?
Can one live without allegories?
Primitivism opens its mouth.
Simplicity is sometimes worse than pain.
There is no smell of social equality anywhere,
An abyss of stratification.
The delights of billionaires, etc.
And intoxication with false wealth.
How can Daniil imagine the Rose of the World
Even half a century later?
A person without light is wingless
In spirit; only the spirit should be praised.
It seems that in our time
The spirit has been trampled upon. And the soul
Has been defiled.
М-м-м-м, хорошая картина.

The subtexts in this painting are rich and multifaceted. The prominent display of the Bible immediately suggests themes of faith, spirituality, and the search for meaning. Van Gogh, who had a strong religious background and attempted a career as a preacher, often turned to religious imagery in his work. The open Bible could symbolize a direct engagement with the divine word, a source of guidance and solace.
The presence of the candle, a traditional symbol of light, knowledge, and hope, further reinforces the spiritual and intellectual nature of the scene. Its light, however, is modest and perhaps fragile, battling against the encroaching darkness of the background, which could represent doubt, despair, or the unknown.
The two books, one open and one closed, might represent different forms of knowledge or understanding. The open Bible signifies revealed truth, while the closed book could represent the unread, the unexamined, or perhaps a less sacred form of knowledge. The worn appearance of the books suggests the passage of time, the accumulation of knowledge, and the human effort involved in seeking wisdom and spiritual understanding.
The overall mood of the painting is contemplative and introspective. It speaks to the solitary act of study, reflection, and spiritual seeking, potentially highlighting Van Goghs own internal struggles and his profound connection to religious and philosophical ideas. The starkness of the composition and the subdued lighting contribute to a sense of quiet intensity, inviting the viewer to ponder the nature of faith, knowledge, and the human condition.
