Flanking this central figure are two individuals, presumably participants in the ritual. One stands on the left, extending a hand toward the immersed man; his garments are rendered with a flowing drapery that suggests movement and engagement. On the right, another figure is similarly positioned, though his posture appears more restrained, almost observing. Both figures are haloed, indicating their sanctity within the narrative.
Above the water, hovering in a luminous sphere, resides a distinct presence – a bearded man surrounded by an aura of light. A divine hand descends from this figure, seemingly bestowing a blessing or initiating the baptismal act. Two winged beings are positioned on either side of the central scene, their wings spread wide, creating a sense of celestial enclosure and emphasizing the sacred nature of the event.
The water itself is depicted with swirling patterns, suggesting both movement and depth. Notably, at the base of the composition, partially obscured by the waters surface, are skeletal remains – a detail that introduces an element of mortality and perhaps alludes to the cleansing power of baptism as a means of spiritual rebirth. The inscription above the scene, rendered in Greek script, likely provides further context for the narrative being presented.
The color palette is dominated by earthy tones – greens, browns, and ochres – with accents of red and gold used to highlight key figures and elements. This limited range contributes to a sense of solemnity and reverence. The overall effect is one of profound spiritual significance, combining naturalistic depiction with established symbolic conventions to convey the transformative power of divine grace.
