Japanese engravings of the 18th-19th centuries in the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Nizhny Novgorod art connoisseurs got a unique opportunity to see works to see works made by Japanese artists in the main genres of Japanese engraving. Until January 30, the Nizhny Novgorod Museum of Art will open an exhibition, presented under the name "Bridge over Infinity."

On the eve of New Year’s Eve, employees of the art museum presented their guests an exhibition that included engravings made in the 18th-19th centuries by talented Japanese artists. The works included in the exposition were presented for participation in the exhibition by the Ural collector Oleg Malakhov from his own collection.

By visiting this exhibition, museum guests will have the opportunity to get acquainted with such famous engraving genres as images of beauties (bidzin-ha), portraits of actors and scenes from performances staged in the theaters of kabuki (yakusha-e), images of battles and samurai (musya-e), landscapes (fukei-ga), images of birds and flowers (katea-ga).

Inspection of engravings included in the exhibition, invites visitors to follow the development of engraving art styles. The exhibition begins with the works of artists Harunobu and Utamaro, who created their masterpieces in the 18th century. Further, landscapes created by masters are placed, thanks to which Japanese engraving gained world fame in the second part of the XIX century.

Oleg Malakhov’s special pride is the engravings he has completely collected from the series “One Hundred Moons of the Moon”, made in 1885-1892 by the last genius of ukiyo-e Taiso Yoshitoshi. Based on the plots of these engravings, you can study the events that took place in the medieval history of Japan. During the exhibition, museum staff provided for special days to get acquainted with Japanese cultural traditions.
