Great portrait painters of the second half of the 18th century - early 19th centuries

The 18th century was a time of widespread flourishing of Russian artistic culture, all types of fine arts. Domestic painters, having inherited the rich experience of Ancient Rus’, having mastered the best of European traditions, achieved significant success and professional excellence. In the field of fine arts, the portrait genre has become widespread, reaching the forefront of artistic positions.

In the exhibition “Great Portrait Painters of the Mid-18th – Early 19th Centuries,” the State Russian Museum presented 40 works by the most famous masters of this period, who left a deep mark on Russian artistic culture.

Russian art of the mid-18th – early 19th centuries. - the time of the true heyday of the portrait genre, which brought to us images of people of his era and was evidence of the pictorial maturity of Russian artists. The canvases of A. Antropov, I. Argunov, F. Rokotov, D. Levitsky, V. Borovikovsky and other masters with their great internal work determined the high position of the domestic school of painting in world art.

As part of the exhibition, a special educational program has been developed for adults and children, including thematic excursions, curatorial lectures, as well as lectures by staff of the Russian Museum. A special interactive lesson with a guide has been developed for children, during which young visitors to the exhibition will be able to learn a lot of new and interesting things about the portrait genre in general and, in particular, about the portraits of the great Russian masters of the 18th and 19th centuries.
