An exhibition of street art by artists of Nizhny Novgorod.

The Nagornaya gallery will host the opening of the Street Romantics exhibition, which presents the work of Nizhny Novgorod street art artists that record the level of development of that part of street art that allows itself to be experimenting, changing, mimicking places under the official art.

Street art is sometimes called the “skin of the city” and quite naturally each city has its own unique “skin” and artistic “face”, formed both by the development of local creative processes and its historical and cultural heritage. Nizhny Novgorod street art stands out against the backdrop of the Russian and world street scene.

Having penetrated the city in the 2000s, as a subculture, “graffiti” and “street art” in Russian quickly evolved on local soil. An active community of artists, theorists and curators such as Vasily Ragozin has formed in the city, with whose participation the exhibitions Artery (2009) and Crosspoint (2010) have been created, new street art exhibitions are regularly held. Each artist has his own face and his own style, but they are united by common ideas about the fragility of life and a common desire to move to remote areas of the unknown. Now Nizhny Novgorod has become the largest gallery of street art, which guided tours. Together with the townspeople, a street art map was created, where more than 300 works were recorded, and which is constantly updated.

Anna Nistratova: “Street art is a very contextual form of art. The artist is required to have a sense of tact, understanding of the architectural context, true love for the city, when you know every yard and every hole on the wall in it. ”

Artem Filatov: “Our city is changing very quickly - historic quarters are cut every month, one house is cut off, demolished wooden buildings, including even very remarkable examples of architecture. If you work in the street space, it is simply impossible not to notice, so every time I choose wooden buildings, be it a house or a barn. Of course, a tree has its own texture, its own aesthetic value, a certain “moire” that arises when working with an object that is aging or collapsing. It’s important for me to draw a parallel from smaller to larger - if someone is interested in a shed, then why doesn’t anyone see valuables in a wooden mansion? In every work I try to capture the symbols of a culture that leaves the city together with wooden houses. ”

The exhibition will show documentation of street works, paintings, graphics, installations of each of the participants, as well as fragments of exhibitions of the collectives Muddlehood, AA (Andrey Olenev + Andrey Druzhayev), the TOY team: “What is good and what is bad?!”, "Etudes of Optimism" (Parallel program of the Manifesto 10 in St. Petersburg). Especially for the exhibition, murals will be created in the hall.

Gallery "Nagornaya" began its work in 1978. This is the first state municipal gallery in Moscow, created outside the center. Initially, the gallery showed mainly academic painting (socialist realism, critical realism, “harsh style”, “left” MOSH), but over the years the focus has shifted towards modern digital technologies, multimedia, installations, photography. "Sense" - the first gallery of modern art in Nizhny Novgorod, opened in 2014. For its short period of existence, the gallery held 10 exhibitions of local and invited authors, held more than 50 lectures and film screenings, becoming the new center of modern culture in the city.

The core of the gallery’s authors is a group of young Nizhny Novgorod street artists who combine work on the street and traditional art practices.
