Bogdanov-Belsky was a talented and distinctive Russian artist. He was often called "peasant." This was due to Bogdanov-Belsky’s great love for the simple Russian life of ordinary people. He painted a huge number of paintings on this subject, left us an invaluable legacy and an opportunity to return to the past. Looking at the artist’s paintings, we can understand how ordinary peasants lived in Tsarist Russia. Bogdanov-Belsky’s paintings are imbued with love and kindness.
The artist was from a poor family and studied painting at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. That is why he was so tender about the subject of peasants. Through his paintings he drew the attention of others to the inconspicuous life of the common people.
The painting "Pupils" depicts two peasant girls who are waiting for a lesson. The modest clothing and shawls on their heads show us how schoolchildren were dressed in the early 20th century. The theme of school excited Bogdanov-Belsky very much, because he was an illegitimate child who lived in poverty with his mother in his uncle’s house. He dreamed of learning, which is why he so often depicts children, books, and school.
The painting "The Disciples" shows us how important education was to the peasants. One of the pupils is hopefully reading something in her book. The second girl seems to be repeating what she has learned in her thoughts, reasoning and analyzing. Their dreams conceal hopes for a brighter future.
The skill of the artist is undeniable. How carefully all the details are painted. Simplicity, depth and kindness are in Bogdanov-Belsky’s paintings. The girl has a cross on her chest. People in past centuries treated God with special reverence. The artist’s paintings are soothing, you want to look at them endlessly.

У Богданов-Бельского настолько четко изображены люди, в частности лица, как на фотографии
Bogdanov-Belsky masterfully depicted the simple life of a Russian person; at least, that is my sincere belief.
In this work, he remarkably conveyed the expression on the face of an ordinary peasant girl, whose eyes, indeed, are captivating and confirm the saying about the mysteriousness of the Russian soul, for as we know, the eyes are its mirror, and in these eyes, in my opinion, there is a true enigma. Her face is fair, quiet, calm, and glows especially; looking at her, one does not think that she is a bad or incapable student, but rather, one immediately declares that she holds a leading position among her familiar peers. As proof of this, the author of the painting presents us with another student, whose face shows obvious tension even in the attempt to master knowledge. Moreover, its not an exaggeration to say that the student whose face glows is a joyful student, who can easily complete even just elementary education very successfully; this student is a model of purity and innocence, a model of unparalleled gentleness, such gentleness that with each deeper understanding of it, one falls in love with her facial expression, pays attention to her gaze, whether suffering or quietly joyous, and understands: Ah, what an extraordinary beauty this Russian soul possesses; no, truly: a great beauty!

In this painting, titled Schoolgirls by Nikolai Bogdanov-Belsky, two young girls are depicted sitting side-by-side, engrossed in their books. The girl on the left, wearing a blue blouse and a dark headscarf with floral accents, is intently reading a book held open in her hands. Her skirt is a soft pink with a plaid pattern. To her right, another girl, adorned with a bright orange and yellow patterned headscarf, gazes slightly upwards, holding a book with a striking spotted cover. She wears a white blouse and a blue plaid sarafan (a traditional Russian dress). They are seated against a dark wooden background, with a hint of a locked door and a small, torn piece of paper tacked to the wall above them.
The subtext of this painting primarily revolves around education, childhood, and innocence, likely set in a rural or traditional Russian context given their attire. The act of reading itself highlights the importance of learning and intellectual growth. The contrast between the two girls engagement with their books can be interpreted in several ways: one is deeply absorbed, while the other seems to be taking a momentary pause, perhaps reflecting or daydreaming. This difference could subtly suggest individual learning styles or moods. The humble setting and simple clothing suggest that education is accessible even in less affluent environments, emphasizing its value. The presence of books and the focus on reading can also evoke themes of hope for the future and the potential that education holds for these young lives. The overall atmosphere is one of quiet contemplation and youthful learning.
