Description of William Turner’s painting The Last Voyage of the Ship Dare
Against the fiery clouds from the setting sun, we observe the movement of a veteran of the Battle of Trafalgar, the warship Dare. A small coal-black self-propelled vessel is towing the battle giant to the banks of the Thames, where it will be dismantled. The plot of the "Last Flight", most likely, was born in the artist’s imagination, but was not copied from nature. The lyrical and sad image of the dilapidated ship became a sign of the bygone era of sailing and a wise reminder of the transience of earthly life.
It would seem that the painting is too simple to admire: a banal sunset on the river with boats. But it was painted by a great artist who by the age of 60 had creatively risen to the very peak of his artistry. The air element occupies the upper half of the canvas, giving it a melancholic sound. The sun blinding in the last minutes of sunset, drizzling rain... The water element is calm, the light breeze lightly touches the mirror-like surface.
And the "Brave", huge and faded, is moving smoothly and measured, yielding to the pull of the tug. It is like a ghost. A white flag is visible in the height: once a hero and victor over the Franco-Spanish squadron, the ship surrenders, having bravely fulfilled its combat duty.
A bright sunset enhances the effect of the last journey of the serving ship. In the plot you can see the allegory and read the fate of a man who has lived a virtuous life, fulfilled his destiny and leaves with dignity.
The artist bequeathed the painting to his native nation and it is now on display in a gallery in London.

The 98-gun ship Temeraire played a distinguished role in Nelsons victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, after which she was known as the Fighting Temeraire. The ship remained in service until 1838 when she was decommissioned and towed from Sheerness to Rotherhithe to be broken up.
