However, after acquiring the painting, Tretyakov erased the second signature beneath the canvas, leaving only Shishkins. He explained his decision by stating that both the concept and execution of the work reflected a style of painting characteristic of Shishkin alone.

The idea for the painting originated during a joint walk in a wonderful pine forest bathed in sunlight, while the landscape itself was found in pristine forests near Lake Seliger. With great reverence for his native nature, Shishkin always chose landscapes from its untouched corners. In this canvas, the artist expressed his love for life and nature.

The painting depicts a dense pine forest, through which the first rays of morning sunlight filter. The artist captured the moment of awakening in the forest and, at the same time, emphasized the vastness of nature by cutting off the tops of the pines in the composition. The onset of morning is indicated by a misty haze that has not yet been completely dispelled by the sunlight.

In the center of the composition are trees uprooted from the ground, around which sleepy bear cubs frolic playfully. One of them tilts its head to the side, listening to the sounds of the forest, while two others engage in playful antics on a fallen tree. It should be noted that in the preliminary sketches, there were only two animals. Later, Shishkin decided to add two more bear cubs. Thanks to this decision, the painting became more dynamic, and elements of a game situation appeared. The bear cubs rejoice at the onset of a new day. They look harmless and kind, despite being wild animals.

Using large trees uprooted from the ground, the artist indicates that this forest is so dense that only wild animals can live there, and the trees here fall either from old age or from hurricane winds, as perhaps was the case this time. The painting is very realistic. It seems that the artist glimpsed a secret of the forest depths, but at the same time did not disturb the inhabitants of the forest.

The paintings of I. I. Shishkin are distinguished by their truthful depiction and soft beauty. Loving and admiring nature, the artist studied many plants, depicting all the smallest details of roots, grasses, fir and pine branches. Shishkins talent was recognized during his lifetime. Many of his paintings adorned the Tretyakov Gallery, while some landscapes can be seen in the Russian Museum and other private or public collections.

Thanks to his painting style, his landscapes can be distinguished from the works of other artists. Ivan Ivanovich paid great attention to the smallest details when depicting the native nature, which became the basis of his landscapes.
