The artist employed a distinctive approach to rendering form. Instead of smooth gradations of tone, surfaces are built up from short, agitated brushstrokes of varying color. This technique creates a fractured effect, dissolving the solidity of objects and figures into a network of visual energy. The woman’s face, while retaining recognizable features, is similarly fragmented; her expression seems to emerge from the interplay of hues rather than being directly defined.
The palette is dominated by cool tones – blues, purples, and greens – which contribute to an overall atmosphere of somberness or reserve. Warmer colors are present, notably in the highlights on her face and hair, as well as in a glimpse of what might be a landscape visible through a window behind her. These warmer areas do not offer relief from the prevailing coolness but rather serve to accentuate it, creating visual tension.
The background is rendered with similar expressive brushwork, blurring the distinction between foreground and background elements. A draped curtain on the right side of the canvas adds verticality to the composition while also contributing to a sense of enclosure. The furniture – a table or cabinet visible to the left – is similarly abstracted, its form suggested rather than precisely defined.
Subtly, there is an impression of psychological complexity. The woman’s direct gaze and formal posture suggest a certain social standing or adherence to convention, yet her expression hints at something more profound beneath the surface. The fractured style of execution might be interpreted as reflecting an inner turmoil or a questioning of established norms. The overall effect is one of restrained emotion conveyed through a highly stylized visual language.
