Several individuals are arranged around the infant, each exhibiting distinct expressions and gestures that contribute to the overall narrative. Two young boys stand closest to the cradle, their gazes fixed intently upon the child. One boy’s posture is more animated, his hand raised in what could be interpreted as a gesture of wonder or offering. The other appears calmer, observing with quiet contemplation. A woman stands slightly behind them, her face turned towards the infant with an expression that blends tenderness and solemnity. To her right, a bearded man looks on, his features conveying a sense of paternal protectiveness and perhaps also awe.
The artist’s use of chiaroscuro – the dramatic contrast between light and dark – is particularly striking.
