Description of the painting by Orest Kiprensky "Dmitry Donskoy at the Kulikovo Field".
Orest Adamovich Kiprensky was a famous Russian portrait painter, the most talented draughtsman and professor at the Academy of Arts. One of the greatest Russian masters of romantic portraiture, he began, like all students of the Academy of Arts, with historical painting.
In 1805, the artist is tasked to paint a large program work on the Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, represented in the battle with Mamai, when after the victory the Prince dies among his soldiers in the grove. The artist, then still a student, copes perfectly with the task and receives a gold medal of the first dignity for the picture, which then allowed him to work extensively abroad.
Plots of national history has always been part of the program of artistic education. Kiprensky depicts the scene in the best traditions of the Italian and Flemish schools of painting - large-scale, colorful and dynamic.
The Grand Duke, whose figure is positioned slightly to the left of the center, throws his hands up in the sky in a prayerful movement and thanks Heaven for the victory over the enemy. Dmitry Donskoy is surrounded by his warriors, participants in the bloody battle.
Their faces show surprise and joy at the news that their leader is alive. The landscape can be seen in the background - an important part of the classical painting - and the dark clouds in the sky sound in unison with the mood of the painting.
The coloring of the work plays one of the most important roles. The harmony of vivid tones, blood-red and emerald-green hues combine in an unknown game of color. Sharp movements of the heroes, precise draping of their clothes, eye-catching tones and, of course, correctly grouped composition - all this helps to perceive the picture as one clear action, descended from the stage performance.
Kiprensky created a classic work made in the best academic traditions and was rightly rewarded for it.

The picture has something of this: people, saint, god, Renaissance, woman, man, book, kneeling, allegory, Mary, group, miracle, veil, spirituality.
Perhaps it’s a painting of a group of people in a wooded area, one of the men has his hand on the head of the woman’s head.
