Description of the painting "The Girl in the Poppy Wreath" by Orest Kiprensky
Orest Kiprensky painted this whimsical portrait in the first half of the 19th century, to be exact, before the 20th. The work has had several titles at various exhibitions and still has several titles to this day, the most famous of which is The Girl in the Poppy Wreath with a Carnation in Her Hand (Mariuccia).
The canvas is painted so realistically and so beautifully that when it was exhibited in the Italian city, local experts did not believe that the girl is depicted by a Russian artist, saying that the Russians can not create such a miracle. One can imagine how offended and unpleasant it was for Kiprensky!
In the most famous title of the painting, voiced above, in brackets is the name of Mariucha. Who is this? It is an Italian girl, Anna-Maria, whose mother was a model and had with the artist not only professional connections.
One day the model was found dead. One of the suspects turned out to be the unfortunate painter. The latter was subjected to a severe harassment campaign that spread from Italy to France. Orestes wandered and hid, having previously asked to put the orphan in a monastery.
After some time, when Anne-Marie was already seventeen years old, the artist, who was under fifty, married her. She did not love him, though she appreciated his care and work (including her own childhood portrait). He adored her and did not do the art he was called to do; he did it only so that the family would have a lot of money to provide for his wife and give her luxurious gifts. From such a difficult life the master began to drink heavily and soon died.
After her husband’s death, his widow sold his paintings, even this lovely portrait (Mariuccia sits with her curious face turned to us, the audience: she asked a question and was waiting for an answer), not wanting to keep it in memory of her husband (which proves her dislike for the latter).

In 1816, Orest Adamovich traveled abroad. He lived in Italy for several years, where he painted the lovely portrait Girl with a Poppy Wreath, which Italians mistook for a work by a master of the Renaissance era. Interestingly, in 1828, he moved to Italy, where he married the woman who was the subject of this wonderful portrait. Her name was Anna-Maria Falcucci.
What a stunning painting! Its painted with so much love and tenderness that you cant take your eyes off it. The artist must have fallen in love with the girl and waited for her to grow up all these years so he could marry her. Ah, love, love!
Нет, слишком долго ждать Кипренскому не пришлось – портрет писался с 16-летней девушки.

The subtexts in this painting can be interpreted in several ways. The poppy wreath, while beautiful, is also associated with sleep and oblivion, which can allude to the transient nature of childhood innocence or a sense of melancholy. The carnation, often symbolizing love or fascination, in the girls hand might represent a budding emotion or a simple offering. Her direct gaze and soft expression could be inviting, yet theres an underlying vulnerability that hints at the complexities of growing up and the loss of innocence. The dark background and the oval framing suggest a contained, intimate world, perhaps reflecting the inner world of the child or the artists focus on capturing a fleeting moment of youthful beauty and contemplation.
