APOSTLE JOHN
Close to Jesus, illuminated,
John perceives the Word,
As a shining idea for the world.
Only what Jesus said,
Lightens the burden of mundane days,
And promises a different life afterwards.
I can only faintly imagine
The forms of being again,
So I turn to the Gospels once more.
There is an idea of the world. And there are words.
There is the dead grass of oblivion -
I cut it off, freeing myself...
John was free from – or did he not have -
Anger, envy, and other arrows,
That pierce the soul like a body.
Jerusalem is very grand.
Who in it yearns for wise books?
The poor quarters are crowded together.
The city, surrounded by hills, hills.
Herods palace is magnificent – we
Should not be seduced by luxury.
Streets. Alleys. Dead ends.
Steps lead to the city ponds.
A massive block of the temple looms.
John understood the meaning of the Last Supper
Better than others – for he was illuminated -
By what would come. The future is frightening.
And on Patmos, he was in spirit,
He foresaw the future, captivated
By images – their layering is strange.
Revelation – a review of all
Significant events up to the 1950s,
Up to the twentieth century.
Then there is an exit into the coded space.
Through the air and sun canopy,
The third millennium has descended.
Close to Jesus, illuminated,
John knew what would come next...

This painting is the left wing of Boschs Triptych of the Hermits and depicts the temptation of Saint Anthony.
What I see:
The painting is dark and filled with nightmarish imagery, suggesting a spiritual struggle.
Subtexts:
The painting is a visual allegory of the temptations and spiritual battles faced by ascetics, particularly Saint Anthony, who is known for his struggles against demons and worldly desires during his time in the desert.
