Flanking this central figure are two female figures, arranged asymmetrically. To the left stands a woman enveloped in blue and white garments, her head bowed towards the deceased man’s face. A halo encircles her head, indicating sanctity. Her posture conveys profound sorrow and intimate connection. On the right, another woman, also crowned with a halo, gazes upon the scene with an expression of anguish. She is clad in red robes, which contrast sharply with the blue of the other figures attire, creating visual differentiation.
The arrangement suggests a moment of lamentation following death. The positioning of the figures – the closeness of the woman on the left and the gaze of the woman on the right – implies a deep emotional bond and shared grief. The presence of halos elevates them beyond mere mortals, suggesting their role as witnesses to a significant event.
The background is dark and indistinct, drawing attention solely to the foreground figures. A decorative paneling pattern is visible behind the scene, providing a sense of enclosure and formality. This backdrop does not distract from the emotional weight of the central narrative but rather serves to frame it within a structured setting. The artists use of light emphasizes the wounds on the deceased man’s body, highlighting his suffering and sacrifice. The overall effect is one of profound pathos and spiritual contemplation.
