TO BE RUSSIAN
Explain to yourself what it means
To be Russian?
That sadness clouds the mind –
Poisonous, impossible to escape?
That you constantly strive for something higher:
The heavenly world – closer than schemes
Of money, material possessions… Above the roof
You long to jump – but why?
That in a storm or in sorrow
You gather yourself into a concentrated force?
In life there are many paths –
It seems that you havent discovered the main one...
What does your soul contain
Excessively? What does it
Suffer for children, for everyone,
And is it destined to suffer?
That sometimes, at the sound of a song,
Tears flow?
Sometimes
Have you known anything more wondrous
Than simple silence, a heroic thing?
That without a feat
You dont want to live? But how to accomplish one?
You dont strive for comfort,
But prefer to live modestly?
To be Russian means so much.
... to hear the song of the blizzard.
And – let life shape us in this way,
The realm of spirit is our goal.
You cannot comment Why?
The architectural style is distinct, suggesting a historical or perhaps even fantastical setting. A low-slung building with classical detailing sits at the base of the tower, its facade rendered in warm yellows and creams. The decorative elements – the ornate gate, the window frames – are simplified but retain a sense of elegance. A wrought iron fence runs along the foreground, separating the viewer from the scene unfolding within.
Several figures populate the lower portion of the painting. A woman dressed in a long, patterned dress stands near the fence, accompanied by a child. Further back, a carriage pulled by horses moves across a grassy area. These individuals appear small and insignificant when contrasted with the scale of the tower, reinforcing its symbolic power.
The color palette is striking. The warm tones of the buildings contrast sharply with the cool hues of the sky, creating visual tension. A sense of dreamlike quality pervades the work, partly due to the loose brushwork and the slightly distorted perspective. The light seems diffused, lacking a clear source, which contributes to the overall feeling of unreality.
Subtly, there’s an element of melancholy present. The figures seem isolated, their activities mundane against the backdrop of this grand structure. One might interpret the tower as representing authority, tradition, or perhaps even isolation – a beacon that simultaneously guides and separates. The scene evokes a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era, tinged with a quiet sadness.
