Despite the Impressionistic style of her work, Moriz always incorporated an element of figurative painting into her canvases. In this particular piece, a small tree serves as a hiding place for a daughter playing with her mother, thus making the main objects of interest clearly visible. Having worked alongside Édouard Manet for many years, Moriz borrowed much from him.

Two women are positioned near this foliage. One, an adult, stands tall in a light-colored dress and a dark hat adorned with what appears to be a ribbon or sash. Her posture is relaxed, her gaze directed downwards, as if engaged in a quiet observation of the child beside her. The second figure, presumably a young girl, is dressed in white and wears a straw hat. She seems to be peering out from behind the shrubbery, her expression hinting at curiosity or playful concealment.
Beyond the immediate foreground, a village unfolds across the middle ground. Buildings with terracotta roofs are nestled amongst rolling hills, creating a sense of depth and distance. The sky is hazy, contributing to the overall atmospheric quality of the work. A body of water, possibly a river or stream, reflects the light and adds another layer to the landscape.
The artist’s brushwork appears loose and impressionistic; details are suggested rather than meticulously rendered. This technique contributes to an effect of spontaneity and captures the fleeting nature of a moment in time. The use of color is not strictly representational but serves to evoke a mood of tranquility and gentle beauty.
Subtly, the painting explores themes of childhood innocence, maternal connection, and the idyllic pleasures of rural life. The child’s position behind the shrubbery suggests a game of hide-and-seek, symbolizing a sense of playful discovery and hidden potential. The adult womans attentive gaze implies a protective and nurturing role. Overall, the work conveys an atmosphere of quiet contentment and appreciation for the simple joys of nature and human companionship.
