Karl Bryullov was an outstanding Russian portrait painter, famous for his peculiar manner of painting. He always approached his work with a soul, making portraits not for customers, but for people for whom he had a special affection. Description of Karl Bryullov’s painting Portrait of the Shishmarov Sisters
Karl Bryullov was an outstanding Russian portrait painter, famous for his peculiar manner of painting. He always approached his work with a soul, making portraits not for customers, but for people for whom he had a special affection. Briullov was a virtuoso character, so he tried not to take official orders for high-ranking officials, because they restricted the artist in his spiritual impulses and endeavors.
In 1839, the artist accepted an order from Athanasius Shishmarev, a retired staff-captain and successful horse breeder. Briullov was to paint a portrait of the two charming sisters Shishmarev, Alexandra and Olga. This task was too simple for the author, so he again broke the framework of the traditional portrait. He tried to reduce the commissioned portrait to a genre sketch, which was very much to the taste of the young ladies. On the canvas girls look very beautiful, they smell of warmth, joy and cheerfulness. Bryullov accurately conveyed the characters of heroines, subtly hinting to the viewer that although the sisters are similar, they are very different, it is noticeable in clothing, poses, facial expressions.
The older sister Alexandra looks more agile and lively. She walks impetuously in front, as if glancing at the audience from the portrait. Her figure is successfully underlined by a purple amazon, which gives away the heroine’s good taste. The veil of tranquil purple color harmonizes beautifully with Alexandra’s dark hair.
Her younger sister Olga contrasts well with her. Although the girls have very similar figures, with thin waists and faces with bright features, we can see how different they are - Alexandra and Olga. Olga looks much more reserved than her determined sister, she seems so shy and calm, but a strong character. These conclusions arise by themselves when you pay attention to the whip, which the girl clutched in her hand as she went down the stairs.
No less interesting is the color solution of the painting: the dense left side resonates with the light right side. Such a solution allowed the artist to successfully emphasize the movement of figures on the canvas. Harmonious compositional solution was found by the artist in pencil sketches. Bryullov specifically used the staircase in the picture to emphasize the motif of the main heroines. The girls are not just part of the portrait, they are rushing to horseback riding, and the master was there to capture the moment in time.
