Sunrise in the summer is early. With the touch of sunlight, nature awakens: birds chirp merrily, leaves unfold towards the sun, bright butterflies flutter joyfully, ants and insects begin their work. Fruits blush from contact with warm rays. And grasses, absorbing moisture from the earth, gain strength and reach for the sun.
By midday, the sun hangs high in the sky, the air is heated, so its best to play in the shade or swim in a reservoir.
In the evening, the heat subsides. The tired sun sets, giving way to the early moon. They are sometimes visible in the sky at the same time. Then, as the moon rises, the first stars gradually appear, and the sky becomes darker and deeper. A gentle breeze lulls the foliage until tomorrows dawn, while birds and daytime butterflies, insects, and ants hide away, replaced by moths and mosquitoes.

Behind this immediate activity, a landscape unfolds. Gentle hills rise in the distance, dotted with buildings that suggest a small settlement nestled into the terrain. A line of trees punctuates the horizon, creating depth and guiding the viewer’s eye further into the scene. The light is soft and diffused, bathing the landscape in a warm glow that contributes to an overall feeling of tranquility.
The composition directs attention towards the interplay between human activity and the natural environment. The stream serves as both a practical resource for washing and a visual element that connects the foreground figures with the distant hills. The placement of the trees on the left side creates a sense of enclosure, while the open vista in the background implies possibility and expansiveness.
Subtly, there is an underlying narrative about community and tradition. The shared tasks performed by the individuals suggest interdependence and a collective identity. The presence of livestock further reinforces this connection to the land and a traditional way of life. While seemingly straightforward, the painting evokes a sense of nostalgia for a simpler existence, hinting at themes of labor, family, and belonging within a specific cultural landscape.
