Abraham Ortelius – Map of North and South America, 1570

This is a detailed map of North and South America, likely from Abraham Orteliuss 1570 atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The map depicts the continents with numerous place names, geographical features, and decorative elements.

What I See:

• Continents and Shores: The outlines of North and South America are clearly visible, though with some inaccuracies and speculative geography, typical for maps of this era. The coastlines are detailed, with many islands and archipelagos labeled.
• Inland Features: Rivers are prominently depicted, especially in South America, with tributaries shown emanating from a large, somewhat amorphous interior. Mountain ranges are also indicated.
• Place Names: A vast array of place names are scattered across the map, written in Latin, indicating regions, cities, and natural formations discovered or imagined by Europeans. Some notable names include HISPANIA NOVA (New Spain, roughly Mexico), CHILAGA (Chile), PERV, PATAGONVM REGIO (Patagonia), and TERRA DEL FUEGO (Land of Fire).
• Decorative Elements: The map is richly adorned with ornamental cartouches, mythical creatures, and illustrations of sailing ships navigating the oceans. A prominent cartouche in the lower left contains the title: AMERICAE SIVE NOVI ORBIS, NO VA DESCRIPTIO (A Description of America or the New World). There are also depictions of sea monsters and crowned heads in the oceans, hinting at the unknown and awe-inspiring nature of the seas.
• Grid Lines and Compass Rose: Latitude lines are marked, and while a precise North arrow isnt explicitly visible in this specific crop, the directions SEPTENTRIO (North), MERIDIES (South), OCCIDENS (West), and ORIENS (East) are prominently labeled along the edges of the map.

Subtexts:

• The New World Narrative: The title itself, America, or the New World, underscores the European perspective of discovery and conquest. It frames these lands as additions to the known world, emphasizing their novelty and potential for exploitation.
• European Dominance and Exploration: The presence of numerous European place names (e.g., Hispania Nova, Francia) reflects the colonial ambitions and claims of European powers. The ships sailing across the oceans symbolize European maritime prowess and their reach across the globe.
• Uncertainty and Imagination: The map also reveals the limitations of European knowledge at the time. Areas of the interior are generalized or left blank, and the existence of mythical creatures suggests that the unknown was often filled with speculation and wonder. The naming of Nova Guinea (New Guinea) as a separate landmass off the coast of South America highlights the ongoing efforts to map and understand these vast territories.
• The Power of Cartography: As an artifact from the first modern atlas, this map represents a significant milestone in the history of cartography. It signifies the growing desire to systematically organize geographical knowledge and communicate it through printed maps, reflecting the intellectual and economic dynamism of the Renaissance.
• Representation of Indigenous Peoples: While the map is dominated by European names and perspectives, some labels and depictions might allude, however vaguely or inaccurately, to the indigenous populations and their established territories, though often through an exoticizing or generic lens.
