The artist employs a clever use of reflection to create a sense of psychological depth. While the woman’s body faces toward the right side of the canvas, her gaze – and indeed her entire focus – is diverted backward. In the mirror hanging on the left wall, we see a sharp, stolen look directed toward someone or something outside the frame. This reflection reveals her face from a different angle, capturing an expression of wary curiosity or perhaps a moment of interrupted privacy.
In the background, a young man stands near an open doorway, acting as a secondary focal point. He is dressed in a structured red tunic and light-colored breeches, holding the leash of a slender, white hunting hound. His presence introduces a narrative element of service or companionship, yet his steady, forward-looking gaze contrasts with the womans furtive movement.
The subtext of the work revolves around themes of surveillance and secrecy. The title suggested by the composition – a sideways glance – implies that what is being looked at (or avoided) is more significant than what is openly displayed. There is a palpable sense of voyeurism; the viewer is positioned as an observer of a private, perhaps even scandalous, moment. The heavy shadows and the formal, somewhat stiff posture of the figures suggest a world governed by strict social etiquette, where true intentions must be hidden behind reflections and subtle, fleeting glances. Through this interplay of light, reflection, and gaze, the artist transforms a simple domestic scene into a study of social tension and hidden emotions.
