Verrocchio, Leonardos teacher, created the painting Baptism of Christ together with his students. Leonardo depicted the little angel in profile, and it is generally believed that he also painted the landscape in the background (which is clearly a work by Leonardo!). Everyone was amazed; the student had surpassed the master. After this, Verrocchio no longer took up painting but dedicated more attention to sculpture.
It is also believed that Sandro Botticelli, a classmate of Leonardo da Vinci, depicted the angel next to him.

Christ, depicted as a youth on the right, is dressed in a blue robe and looks away with a slightly troubled or pensive expression. His hands are clasped, one nervously holding a thin, pale pink cloth embroidered with gold trim. The contrast between the angels serene offering and Christs introspective gaze hints at the weight of the divine purpose Christ is about to embrace.
The subtext of this painting, taken from Andrea del Verrocchios The Baptism of Christ, carries significant theological and symbolic meaning. The presence of angels at Christs baptism signifies divine affirmation and heavenly witness to this pivotal moment. The angels posture and action of whispering to Christ can be interpreted as conveying Gods approval and the holy spirits imminent descent, as described in the Gospel accounts. Christs youthful appearance and somewhat somber expression emphasize the solemnity and human aspect of his divine mission, foreshadowing his earthly suffering and sacrifice. The rich fabrics and the glowing halos suggest the divine nature of the figures, while the rocky, naturalistic setting grounds the sacred event in the earthly realm. This detail focuses on the emotional and spiritual interaction between the divine and the human, setting the stage for Christs public ministry.
