FOR HOLY WATER
1
They pour water all day long.
Grandmothers – its awkward to call them that.
The cauldrons are large and there is much work involved, -
Without prayer, it is impossible to accomplish it.
Near the iconostasis, the cauldrons stand in a row,
Three old women, a young man,
Pouring water, they speak good words,
They have no excess of anything –
They work all day long.
The queue is twisted tightly.
Its cold, and everyone has their own worries.
But the water – like an attribute –
Is it faith? Is it tradition? Understand...
The spiritual strength of those old women attracts,
My own qualities are not pleasing to me, and I become sad.
2
The tail of the queue stretches out beyond
The church fence, twisting and turning.
The snow is painfully white, and it blinds the eyes,
Im not ready to see hope in its whiteness...
I see cemetery crosses,
Crows are cawing, the air is bluish.
And you move with the queue –
Baptism, a holiday of great depth.
Past the church walls, which are red,
You read the Lords Prayer, and then enter the church.
You are a human being. And you are a vessel of sin,
A vessel of sin, but with a drop of light in the center.
3
Against the backdrop of the iconostasis,
The cauldrons of water stand.
You have waited for your hour,
You receive the water and rejoice.
What is it like to pour
Water all day long? Probably, prayer
Helps to overcome
The darkness, which is essentially a grave...
4
From the cold – into the warmth of the church,
They sell balloons and bottles,
Yellow light, and the candles are bright,
We entered, and we were in a special place.
People move among the icons,
Gradually approaching the cauldrons...
We move together, me and him,
Connecting with a mysterious force...
5
Someone lights candles, someone whispers something,
You receive the water – how much lighter it becomes.
The point here is not in the water, of course,
But in the soul, in prayer, etc.
You cannot comment Why?
Behind the assembled group, buildings are discernible, forming a backdrop that establishes a clear sense of place – a settlement or village. A prominent structure with a distinctive dome punctuates the skyline, suggesting a religious building, possibly a church or cathedral. The architecture appears traditional and vernacular, contributing to an overall impression of cultural specificity.
The water itself plays a crucial role in the visual narrative. Its surface reflects the scene above, creating a mirrored effect that doubles the presence of both figures and buildings. This mirroring not only enhances the depth of the composition but also subtly emphasizes the importance of the water as a focal point within the ritualistic context. The ripples on the water’s surface introduce a degree of dynamism to an otherwise static arrangement.
The monochromatic palette, achieved through shades of gray, lends the scene a somber and contemplative quality. It evokes a sense of historical distance, suggesting that this is not merely a depiction of a contemporary event but rather a representation of tradition and enduring faith. The limited tonal range also directs attention towards the forms and spatial relationships within the composition, minimizing distractions from color or vibrancy.
Subtly embedded within the scene are indications of social hierarchy. While difficult to discern with certainty due to the monochromatic nature of the work, variations in dress or posture among the figures might suggest differences in status or role within the community. The positioning of certain individuals – perhaps closer to the central figure or structure – could further reinforce these distinctions. Overall, the painting conveys a sense of collective identity and spiritual devotion rooted in a specific cultural and geographical setting.
