In one hand, she firmly grips the hilt of a sword, a weapon of execution and authority. The blade points downward, yet the tension in her grip implies the readiness to enforce a decision. Conversely, her raised arm holds a pair of balanced scales. This juxtaposition creates a central tension between two opposing functions: the heavy, decisive force of punishment and the delicate, measured precision of evaluation.
The artist utilized a rich, dramatic palette to heighten the figures importance. The brilliant red of her cloak provides a stark contrast against the dark, atmospheric background, imbuing the scene with a sense of urgency and passion. Her white drapery, rendered with complex highlights and shadows, lends a sense of purity and monumental stability to her form. Gold accents – seen in her crown, her jewelry, and the hilt of the sword – serve to elevate her status from a mere mortal to a divine or personified ideal.
The subtext of this work revolves around the equilibrium required for true governance. The scales represent the impartial weighing of evidence and truth, while the sword represents the necessary power to uphold that truth once it has been determined. By placing these two elements in the hands of a single figure, the author suggests that law without power is ineffective, but power without measurement is tyrannical. The dark, indistinct background strips away any specific temporal or geographical context, forcing the viewer to engage with the universal struggle to balance mercy and retribution, or logic and force.
