V. Serov is an outstanding portrait painter with a unique technique. His works are recognizable and convey not only the external characteristics of the characters, but also their rich inner world. The artist was able to catch the peculiarity of the character and skillfully transfer it to the canvas. His portrait is painted in typical Serov technique, where big careless brush strokes make the picture look a little rough, as if it was painted at once. Korovin was a friend of the artist and they were inseparable.
Description of Valentin Serov’s painting "Portrait of Konstantin Korovin".
Different characters and manners did not interfere with their communication. Serov was always focused, at the same time Korovin was scattered, unkempt.
In the picture you can see his unbrushed hair. Recklessness and carelessness successfully conveyed by the artist. It is hard to call Korovin a diplomat or a bank worker, he is clearly a creative person. His relaxed posture shows that he has no desire to observe the rules of decorum and etiquette. He feels at home, relaxed.
There are some sketches on the table, but even in their absence, you can guess this man’s profession. Korovin didn’t like to hesitate, he did everything fast and in a hurry. So he painted and his paintings. Serov, in turn, worked on canvases for a long time, all the time refining them to perfection.
The portrait of Korovin, the artist finished quickly, he decided in this way to convey the character and fluency of a friend. Broad brushstrokes make fine details indistinct. This technique allows you to plunge into the atmosphere prevailing during the creation of the picture.
Korovin is in the foreground, all entourage is rather blurred, if it is impossible to recognize the details they can be made up by oneself. Serov managed to convey Korovin’s gaze. He looks with mockery, with his lips tightly pressed together, but his eyes are smiling. Korovin was a merry man and a joker in life and his portrait reflects his cheerful disposition and attitude towards life in general.
