PANTOCRATOR
Rusty arrows of light
Will strike the clouds.
A stream in the brain will tremble
From a gust of truth.
With a face like a rusty axe,
You yourself are old and heavy.
In your mind – a tangle of thoughts.
May speech bring help!
The Pantocrator gazes,
Looking into your Greek soul.
Feofan is famous –
He never dreamed of fate.
The Pantocrator will burn
Into your soul with his eyes.
Faith will bind you to the cross.
I shall sing of faith.
Without faith, the earth is dead,
The sun does not shine, no.
Words sound weak,
Light distorts.
A powerful surge of faith
Draws the sinful upward –
He wants to merge with the angelic choir,
But who will accept him?
With a face like a rusty axe –
How have you, weak one, lived?
You yourself are pure shame,
A diminishing of strength.
The Pantocrator is everywhere.
He protects your soul,
Your essence, etc.
Therefore, hell cannot consume you.
The Pantocrator is everywhere –
Strive only towards him –
Now and forever, here
And there, denying darkness.

The artist’s handling of light is particularly striking. It focuses almost entirely on the mans face and hands, illuminating them with a soft, diffused glow that contrasts sharply with the surrounding darkness. This concentrated illumination accentuates the texture of his skin – the subtle wrinkles around the eyes and mouth suggest age and experience – and highlights the density of his beard. The rest of the figure is rendered in shadow, obscuring details and creating an atmosphere of mystery.
The limited color palette reinforces this sense of solemnity. Predominantly dark tones – blacks, browns, and deep reds – dominate the scene, contributing to a mood of introspection and perhaps even melancholy. There are subtle gradations within these shades, achieved through skillful layering and blending of pigments, which adds depth and complexity to the work.
Beyond the straightforward depiction of a man, subtexts emerge from the painting’s formal elements. The darkness enveloping the figure could be interpreted as symbolic of an unknown past or future, suggesting a person burdened by secrets or facing significant challenges. His direct gaze implies a certain self-assurance, but also invites scrutiny and perhaps even suspicion. The luxurious attire speaks to his social standing, yet the somber expression hints at a deeper complexity that transcends mere material wealth. Ultimately, the painting conveys an impression of a man of considerable importance, possessing both authority and a quiet inner turmoil.
