What is the meaning of a work of art?

Each work of art is a product of the artist’s creative activity, the result of his rethinking of the surrounding reality. A person looks at the world, analyzes what is happening, passes through the prism of his worldview and tries to interpret all this in his work.

Any work of art has its own meaning and carries a certain value. But will it pass through the centuries and retain its relevance? The answer to this question depends on many characteristics of the work, the presence or absence of some key aspects in it. Among them:

The system of images. Images in a work of art play one of the main roles. Does the author describe typical people or choose extraordinary personalities? Trying to generalize the characters and relationships between people, or trying to describe something unique, complex or conflict situation? The value of the work depends on this. In each era, their images were valued. The Middle Ages gave us the image of a knight, a noble and courageous man. The era of Romanticism brought into the world art the image of a mysterious hero, with a blurred past and naive views on the present. It was these heroes that were demanded by those eras and in this their success. The heroes of Byron and Scott forever entered the world of literary art. The problems of the work. There is a certain circle of topics that will always be in demand, and for many centuries have been embodied in the works of art of various types of art. The themes of love and hate, betrayal and fidelity, life and death, parents and children, fatum and circumstances have been used at all times, fitting into the framework of a certain era. In the modern world, the range of topics is expanding more and more, since there are less and less prohibited topics for society. The idea of the work. By idea is meant the goal that the author pursued when creating his creation. What did he mean by that? Perhaps the author wanted to share his memories? Or to draw public attention to one of the problems? Or blame him for something? The idea of the work is also the key factor that determines the meaning and value of the work, its relevance at all times of the existence of art.

The value of the work can be appreciated in synchrony and diachrony. You can look at it from the point of view of the era in which it was created and evaluated, given the historical framework in which the author lived and worked. Only by fully understanding the moral foundations of that society, social and political conditions, can we fully understand the works and give it an adequate assessment.

You can also evaluate the work and its value for art in development. After all, there are such writers whose works have never lost their relevance to this day, although they were written in completely different conditions and moral frameworks. The works of Shakespeare, London, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov and today is a source from which you can draw answers to many questions. They reflect the state of society and human thoughts as they are, with all the complexities and ambiguities. And although many of their works were written more than a hundred years ago, the problems described in them exist today.

Although not always compliance with historical conditions created works of success. During the piece-wise created socialist realism, many artistic creations were created to demand the party, the main task of which was to depict Soviet reality, the successes of the five-year plans and the activities of collective farms. It was forbidden to create any conflict situations in the works and complex images. Such literature did not last long and today has no value, but is used only as a visual aid to piece literature. Such examples show us that art should develop in its own way, only then can it incorporate the best of its era.

The meaning of the work is a broad and ambiguous concept. Any art requires careful study and can be interpreted in different ways. Each recipient perceives the works through his experience and worldview, so it’s wrong to talk about a single sense of art.

In discussing the value and meaning of works, other types of art can also be affected. Music, theater, cinema and painting have the same properties as literary art. But literature, unlike them, is created using the most plastic material. After all, a word can describe any type of art.

A system of images, an idea, a problem - all this is characteristic of any work, regardless of the type of creative activity, although it is expressed in different ways. But one can also observe a pattern: some plays have not left the stage for many decades, some musical compositions are recognized as classics, and some are forgotten. Some paintings are known to all, others to no one. This is due to the value and meaning of these works.

The difficulty is that there is no definite scale for evaluating artistic creations. The significance of a work for mankind has been evaluated for years, decades, during which it has been criticized, interpreted, and attempted to understand it. If a work passes this test, it is preserved in the memory of the cultural heritage of mankind as such that has deep meaning and value to people at all times.

During the existence of human civilization, millions of diverse works have been created: paintings, books, songs, poems, poems. But only a small part of them is preserved and transmitted to future generations as a model of its kind.

There are cases when works were not appreciated by contemporaries and recognition came to them after the death of the author. Only time can determine the value of a work, and criticism is not always central to the recognition of creations.
