CSI Zarya will continue “Alternative Fridays” with the fourth season of ART: 21 Automatic translate

The Zarya Center for Contemporary Art, in collaboration with the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture, presents the fourth season of the documentary series “Art in the 21st Century” / ART: 21 of the American PBS channel. The screenings will take place in the cinema center of the Center for Contemporary Art “Zarya” (avenue 100, Vladivostok 155, workshop 2) on February 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 8 p.m. Free admission.

The series of the American channel PBS talks about how contemporary art finds answers to a variety of questions about people and phenomena of our day. In each film of the cycle, there are four interviews by contemporary artists with a different history and approach to art. The series are named for keywords that characterize the work of the heroes of the interview and indicate the most important issues for them.

ART: 21 is an opportunity to visit the workshops of key artists of our time, to get acquainted with the variety of techniques and techniques of contemporary art, to get an idea of ​​the problems that are developed by the “heroes of our time”.

"Protest" - February 7 at 20:00, admission is free

In the 21st century, the artist is still a revolutionary, only his ways to subvert the foundations and criticize the world around him are greatly modified. The legendary protest artist Nancy Spero gives PBS one of her latest interviews on how art can change attitudes towards war, machismo and exploitation. The photographer An-Mai Le protests in his work against militarism and the military machine, removing the painstaking training of troops and testing of military equipment. Alfredo Haar finds poetic allegories with flowers, landscapes and elusive portraits of victims of repression in Rwanda, Vietnam and Chile. And Jenny Holzer is struggling with indifference and consumption with the huge LED messages that she places on the most popular buildings in big cities.

"Romance" - February 14 at 20:00, free admission

Romantic affection and love are played out in the “Romance” series by four contemporary artists. In her video works, Laurie Simmons makes puppet shows about the indispensable intricacies and shades of relationships within a couple, family or community. Romance for the painter Larry Pittman is a transfer of the religious ecstasy of Latin American culture in temperamental subjects and a warm bright palette. Judy Pfaff comes up with melancholy installations of fused metal, burnt paper and leather under the influence of sad and bright memories of dead friends. French artist Pierre Jouig conveys the feelings of a love experience through emotional video landscapes, touching performances and installations, saturated with attachment to pop culture.

"Ecology" - February 21 at 20:00, admission is free

The desire to connect with nature in the 21st century is digital and intangible, to explain the natural course of things or to show the fragility of nature - this is what artists involved in the Ecology series do. The sculptor Ursula von Readingsward makes complex and large-scale structures of wood with uneven relief, imitating natural forms. Multimedia artist Inigo Manglano-Ovalle uses the knowledge of meteorologists to create poetic statements about the state of ecology - from the movement of clouds to tornadoes. Photographer Robert Adams takes black and white landscapes of endangered forests and cut down plantations: this is how he shows the crisis and the attrition of human-nature relations. And Mark Dion transfers huge fragments of the jungle to the exhibition halls, where they continue to grow and bloom in front of the audience.

"Paradox" - February 28 at 20:00, free admission

To explain the problem or show contradictions in the modern world, artists often resort to a paradox, as the heroes of this series do. For Mark Bradford, collages of street signs and posters with their sometimes ridiculous messages and promises to make life easier - inspiration and material for large canvases. Katherine Sullivan directs absurd videos on the verge of mime and parody, exposing social roles and types in different historical eras. The painter Robert Rayman is most interested in the ease of painting and the paradoxically complex methods that it creates: in his white canvases, several layers of strokes and months of preparation. The political projects of Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calsadilla, in a contradictory combination of audio and video, paint the image of American imperialism and explore the issues of dominance of power.
