Nizhny Novgorod transferred to the exhibition "History of Russian Design 1917-2017" Soviet magazines of the 80s

Nizhny Novgorod. August 30, 2018. A resident of Nizhny Novgorod took part in a competition organized by the Moscow Design Museum with the support of SIBUR as part of the Formula of Good Deeds charity program. “In Soviet times, the design of clothing for the mass consumer lagged significantly behind European trends,” said Olga Druzhinina, curator of the exhibition. - Basic sewing and knitting skills were almost mandatory for every Soviet woman. Magazines were the only guide to the world of fashion, trends and practical guidance for creating masterpieces. Such magazines are a typical example of the graphic design of those years.

The exhibition “History of Russian Design 1917-2017” teaches you to look at familiar things in a different way. What if an antique watch from my grandmother or a vintage skirt in a closet are real examples of design from yesteryear? Any resident of the Nizhny Novgorod Region can take part in the competition of objects of Soviet design, supplement the exposition of the exhibition and find out the history of objects stored in the family. An exhibit may be clothing, a household item, a book, a poster or a souvenir issued in the period 1960-1980 or earlier. Of particular interest are items made at enterprises of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

According to Catherine Lavrentieva, Ph.D., professor of MGHPA im. Stroganov, great-granddaughter of the founder of Russian design, Alexander Rodchenko: “The competition, announced by the Moscow Museum of Design, calls to evaluate the space of household items in terms of“ technical aesthetics ”. To see in them - often accompanying several generations - fragments of the history of the objective world, objects whose presence in the house often gave their owners a special status. It is enough to recall the first televisions - their owners became the focus of cultural life, when all the neighbors gathered at the “Blue Light”. It is especially important that the competition aims to collect information about the Nizhny Novgorod enterprises that have contributed to the formation of the life of citizens. This approach will make it possible to add additional details to the history of domestic design. ”

The exhibition “History of Russian Design 1917-2017” is the first exhibition in modern Russia, which presents the best examples of Russian design of three periods: constructivism (1917 – early 1930s), the formation and development of the Soviet design system (1950–1980) and modernity )1990–2017).

Moscow Museum of Design
