A summary of "The Life of a Bachelor" by Honoré de Balzac

Honoré de Balzac’s 1842 novel depicts a struggle for an inheritance and the disintegration of a family under the weight of greed and selfishness. Set in France between 1792 and 1839, the work shows how blind maternal love and self-interest ruin the lives of loved ones.

This book is part of the "Human Comedy" series, forming part of the "Scenes from Provincial Life" section. It is the third book in the "Bachelors" trilogy, which also includes the novels "Pierrette" (book one) and "The Priest of Tours" (book two). Films based on this work were released in 1944 and 1960.

Origin of the Brideau family

In 1792, a doctor named Rouget, known for his difficult personality, lived in Issoudun. His wife gave birth to a son, Jean-Jacques, and ten years later, a daughter, Agathe. Rumors of his wife’s infidelity engendered his suffering and he decided to disinherit his daughter. Agathe was sent to Paris to live with her uncle, Descoing, a grocer.

During the Reign of Terror, Descoings was guillotined after being denounced. His widow, Descoings, married the beautiful Agathe to Bridau, a selfless official at the Ministry of the Interior. The couple had two sons, Philippe and Joseph. Philippe became his mother’s favorite for his beauty and spirited nature, while Agathe treated the modest and taciturn Joseph with coolness. In 1808, Bridau died of exhaustion in the service, leaving his widow with a pension of four thousand francs.

The Fall and Crimes of Philip

The eldest son, Philippe, shows an aversion to learning but passionately dreams of military service. At seventeen, he arrives at Saint-Cyr, quickly earning the rank of captain of cavalry and the Legion of Honor for bravery during the Napoleonic Wars. After the fall of the Empire, Philippe finds himself on half pay. He refuses to serve the Bourbons, spends his time in gambling houses, and makes dubious acquaintances.

The youngest son, Joseph, discovers a calling for painting. Despite his mother’s disapproval, considering the artist’s profession a miserable one, Joseph studies with the sculptor Chaudet and the painter Gros.

Philippe goes to America, to Texas, having borrowed ten thousand francs from his mother’s savings. The speculation fails, and Philippe returns to Paris a thoroughly corrupted man. He robs his mother and Madame Descoings, who lives with them.

Having found a job as a newspaper cashier, Philippe squanders eleven thousand francs on the dancer Mariette. To save her son from prison, Agathe sells her state pension. Philippe continues to gamble. To raise money for his next bet, he steals twenty gold coins from Madame Descoings, hidden in her mattress. She planned to use the money to bet on a lottery combination she had been calculating for twenty-one years.

On the day of the draw, these numbers actually win three million francs, but the bet is not placed due to theft. The shock causes Madame Descoing to die of a stroke. The family is plunged into utter poverty. Philippe is hospitalized, then becomes embroiled in an anti-government conspiracy and ends up in a Luxembourg prison.

Intrigues in Issoudun

Agathe leaves behind her brother, Jean-Jacques Rouget, who has inherited an annual income of forty thousand francs. This mentally challenged bachelor is completely under the influence of his former maid, Flore Brazier, nicknamed "The Unclear." Flore’s lover, former officer Maxence Gilet (Max), has also moved into the Rouget household. Max leads a local youth group, the "Knights of Idleness," which is known for its nocturnal mischief.

On the advice of their godmother, Madame Ochon, Agathe and Joseph travel to Issoudun to try to reclaim their rightful inheritance. Max and Flora plot against their visiting relatives. Joseph discovers rare paintings by great masters in his uncle’s house, which have adorned the walls since the sack of the monasteries. Jean-Jacques, who knows nothing about art, agrees to give the art collection to his nephew for four thousand francs.

Max orchestrates a provocation. He forces his enemy, the Spaniard Fario, to stab himself in the street and blames Joseph. The artist is detained by the police, but witnesses confirm his alibi. Faced with the hostility of the locals and their impotence in the face of Max’s machinations, Agathe and Joseph return to Paris.

Philip’s arrival and the massacre of Max

The Court of Peers sentences Philippe to five years of supervised release, assigning him residence in Issoudun. Upon arriving in the city, Philippe acts quickly. He surveys the situation and teams up with the old miser Ochon, the Spaniard Fario, and respected retired officers.

Philippe reveals to his uncle Max and Flora’s true intentions, attempting to transfer all of Rouget’s capital into their own name. He forces Jean-Jacques to lock Flora out of the house and deprives Max of access to the old man. At a banquet celebrating the anniversary of Napoleon’s coronation, Philippe provokes Max to a duel.

The next morning, the opponents clash with swords behind the old Capuchin church. In a brutal duel, Philippe is wounded in the forehead, but manages to deliver a fatal blow to Max.

Philippe forces his uncle to marry Flora to legitimize her status, but in the process extorts power of attorney from Jean-Jacques to manage the entire fortune. He then moves his uncle and Flora to Paris and involves Rouget in constant debauchery with ballerinas. The old man quickly dies of exhaustion.

Philippe marries the widow Flora and takes possession of the entire inheritance of one and a half million francs. He then abandons his wife in poverty, having driven her into drink with the help of his drinking buddies.

The Exposure and Death of Philip

Agatha learns too late the truth about her eldest son’s cruelty and treachery. She realizes how unfair she was to her youngest son, Joseph, who supported her through his loyalty and labor. After receiving Philippe’s heartless refusal to help, Agatha falls ill with grief and dies, only managing to ask Joseph’s forgiveness.

Flora dies in the hospital from exhaustion and illness. Philippe purchases the Brambourg estate, registers its entail, receives the title of count, and the position of lieutenant colonel of the royal guard. He plans to marry Amelia de Soulanges, the daughter of an influential general.

However, Joseph’s friends, the artist Bixiou and the lawyer Desroches, reveal all of Philippe’s crimes to the bride’s father: theft, driving his mother and wife to death, and inheritance fraud. The Count de Soulanges calls off the wedding.

Wanting to increase his fortune to ten million francs, Philippe began to speculate on the stock exchange, trusting the bankers Nucingen and du Tillet. The bankers played against him, and during the Revolution of 1830, Philippe lost all his cash.

Having lost his money, Philippe went to Algeria, hoping to gain favor. In 1839, during a retreat, he and his squadron were ambushed by Arabs and killed.

Joseph Bridau marries the daughter of a wealthy tax farmer, gains recognition as an artist and inherits the Brambourg estate, the title of count and a collection of paintings.
