Rare editions returned to the library of Sevastopol Automatic translate
SEVASTOPOL. According to the press service of the Sevastopol Maritime Library. Admiral M.P. Lazarev, recently they were given a collection of ten rare editions of the XIX century. Such a gift for one of the oldest naval book collections in Russia was made by the head of Rospechat M.V. Seslavinsky.
It is noteworthy that all books are marked with the bookplate of the Maritime Library, which means that previously they belonged to its collection. Bibliographers suggest that they were acquired even before the first defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855. It was during this period, together with members of the library’s committee of directors, the future admirals, the heroes of defense of Sevastopol P.S. Nakhimov and V.A. Admiral M.P., Chief Commander of the Black Sea Fleet and Ports, was engaged in the Kornilov command and staffing of the fund. Lazarev. The book fund was completed with the most important publications on military and naval topics, as well as collected works on other branches of knowledge, among which were very rare books dating from the 18th – 19th centuries.
Bibliographers note that the tradition of donating books is a very old one and it was with it that the story of the creation of the largest Maritime Library in Sevastopol began. So, at one time, Admiral Lazarev donated more than 1 thousand books from his personal collection to the fund. Then the library shelves were replenished with publications donated by admirals F. Oktyabrsky, I. Kasatonov, S. Makarov, V. Kornilov, A. Kolchak, as well as the publisher G. Moskvich, historian N. Klado and professor D. Mendeleev.
“This is a series of books from my personal collection that I have selected for many years. All of them had a difficult fate, once having left their native walls not of their own free will. Now they are returning to their historical homeland, ”said the head of Rospechat M. Seslavinsky, passing on rare editions to the library director Nikolai Krasnolitsky.
Recall that the Maritime Library was founded in 1822 by order of Admiral A.S. Greig, but its significant growth occurred after 1834, during the command of the Black Sea Fleet, Admiral Lazarev. It was thanks to his efforts that not only funds were allocated from the state treasury for the formation of the book fund, but also allocations were received for the construction of a separate building for the library. Unfortunately, many rare and unique editions were lost in the 1930s, as well as during World War II.
